Birthplace of the bicycle keeps moving forward
Local Realtor Nikkie O’Toole fittingly describes Ansonia as a city “in motion.” O’Toole was speaking of the ongoing development of the southern Connecticut locale’s downtown district. But the phrase is quite apt, as Ansonia is the birthplace of the pedal-powered bicycle. Pierre Lallament rode his new invention from Ansonia to New Haven in April 1866. More than 150 years later, Ansonia is still focused on moving forward. The city’s bucolic setting, notable for the Naugatuck River that runs through it, helps maintain a small-town feel amid continued growth. “They’re in the process of upgrading. They’re revitalizing the area, their town,” says O’Toole of the city’s efforts. Those efforts can be seen along the river with development of an $18 million soccer and sports training complex.

An array of dining options anchors a growing downtown
Travel to the heart of Ansonia today and you will experience a city humming with the sound of modern transportation and the exchange of goods and services. "Downtown Ansonia is known for its unique restaurants with every flavor you can think of,” says O’Toole. Uptown Bar & Eatery, a Caribbean fusion restaurant located in a 19th-century opera house building, is a featured stop among the myriad dining options. Residents also have access to restaurants showcasing New American, Latin, Italian and Japanese cuisine along the downtown strip. Nearby, Target anchors a concentration of retail stores. Clothes, jewelry and even glitter are among the offerings available at stores along Main Street.

Established housing features a variety of architectural styles
An impressive collection of established housing is available to potential homebuyers. Renovated Queen Annes stand out among the array of homes that also includes striking bungalow-style homes with inviting porches, large Cape Cods with their distinctive double dormers, Colonial-influenced farmhouse-style homes and traditional ranch-style homes on expansive lots. Prices typically range between $250,000 and $500,000. The residential appeal of Ansonia is illustrated by its low inventory. It’s a place where people want to buy – if they can. "The market is depleted like everywhere else,” says O’Toole. “There are not enough homes available."

Outdoor lovers have plenty of recreational options
The Naugatuck River highlights the city’s natural beauty and provides kayakers and canoers the opportunity to explore the landscape at their own pace. Anglers can pull an assortment of fish out of the river, including trophy-sized trout and salmon. And the river is the perfect setting for growth. In March 2023, city officials broke ground on a soccer and sports training development along Olson Drive, a location that had long been vacant after removal of apartment housing. The centerpiece of the project is a 39,000-square foot indoor facility and outdoor field for Ole Soccer. The facilities will be used for Ole's youth training programs and host games between regional semi-professional clubs. A second, larger building at the site has been leased to organizations that provide training in basketball, football and lacrosse. Ansonia Nature & Recreation Center on the city’s east side provides access to more than 150 acres of wooded hills, open fields and streams, and an adjacent section of the Naugatuck State Forest provides outdoor enthusiasts even more opportunities to explore. The nature center is home to a collection of native animals who are housed there because they cannot survive in the wild. These “animal ambassadors” welcome children and other groups to the many educational programs and guided hikes that make up a busy schedule of events. The complex also features athletic fields and a playground. The Nolan Athletic Complex is the center of the city’s organized activity. Its athletic spaces regularly host youth competition, and it is the site of large-scale community events. Rock The Valley is a popular free music festival held there every summer.

Conveniently located rail line follows the river north and south
Access to transportation is a prized convenience for the city’s residents. Bus stops can be found throughout downtown, and nearby along the river is a commuter-rail station. The rail line follows the river north to downtown Waterbury about 15 miles away, and it follows the Housatonic River south into Milford less than 10 miles away.
