Large homes in a well-established neighborhood
Like many other neighborhoods in Apple Valley, “Cedar Knolls homes were developed during the early years of Apple Valley’s growth,” says Petrashek. Many were built during the 1970s and as a result, today the streets are lined with mature, leafy trees. The area is also home to some new builds, as there are quite a few lots for sale, with lakeside lots going for nearly $400,000 per acre while non-lakeside lots are listed at $261,000 per acre. Housing styles vary here and include split levels, ramblers, Craftsman and Colonial Revivals, with the occasional modern farmhouse thrown in the mix. Most homes here are larger, exceeding 3,000 square feet, and feel secluded beneath the dense tree canopies. The median price of a house in Cedar Knolls is $577,500, which is higher than the national median of $406,100.

Fishing, picnics and walking in Cedar Knolls parks
Farquar Park is one of two parks in Cedar Knolls and features sheltered picnic areas, sports fields and a lake. The water quality in Farquar Lake is generally poor, with algae blooms common, so it’s not the best for swimming. However, there’s a pier for shore fishing, and residents can take their kayaks and canoes out. Summerfield Park is a wooded park with a playground, paved walking path and a pond in the middle. Cedar Knolls is also close to Innisfree Park and Johnny Cake Ridge Park, which has pickleball courts and athletic fields for the schools. This neighborhood is also just 3 miles from the Minnesota Zoo which features everything from cows and pigs to kangaroos and pumas.

For things unavailable at the farm, Target and Lunds @ Byerlys, a Minneapolis grocery chain, are 3 miles away, and Hy-Vee is 4 miles. There aren’t any restaurants within the neighborhood, but East China is about 1 mile away and Newt’s Apple Valley Grill is about 3 miles away. East China is primarily a takeout spot, though there is limited seating. The menu includes items like fried rice, chow mein, chop suey and lo mein. Winter and summer celebrations in Apple Valley
Two of Apple Valley’s largest yearly events take place at the nearby Johnny Cake Ridge Park, which is about 1.5 miles away. And because Minnesotans know that the best way to survive a long winter is to try and enjoy it, Apple Valley also hosts the annual Mid-Winter Fest. The festival includes mite-level hockey games, a medallion hunt, Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, horse-drawn wagon rides, recycling bin racing (it’s exactly what it sounds like), fire pits, s’mores, hot cocoa and more. The event concludes with a fireworks display. Johnny Cake Ridge Park is also home to the Freedom Days festival held around the Fourth of July, which is a classic carnival-like event with a parade, rides, games, fried food and fireworks.

We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
