Next to the Arcata Marsh and home to Redwood Curtain Brewery, Samoa Boulevard mixes nature and easy access to shopping and dining while maintaining a quiet atmosphere. “It’s a sleepy area,” says Larry Doss, Broker and Owner of Ming Tree Realty. “We’re a lot different from the rest of the state; we’re more laid-back.”
Samoa Boulevard is close to Arcata Bay, and the Arcata Marsh borders the neighborhood. The 300-acre marsh has 5 miles of walking and biking trails, and the entire area doubles as a wastewater treatment facility. “I wouldn’t say there’s a smell,” says Andrew Parker, a Broker with Azalea Realty who grew up in the area. “I walk my dog through there. People love it.” Through a combination of human ingenuity and natural processes, the marsh turns the city’s wastewater into a habitat for a variety of animals. The Arcata Sports Complex is about a mile away and has several indoor and outdoor sports facilities. Samoa Boulevard is also close to the Arcata Ball Park, home to the Humboldt Crabs, a collegiate summer baseball team made up of different NCAA players from across the country.
Redwood Curtain Brewing Company offers a variety of beers on tap and hosts a pair of food trucks, South G Kitchen and Curtain Cookin’ Nook, seven days a week. The brewery also hosts live music and trivia nights throughout the week. Most of Arcata’s shops and restaurants are about half a mile away. SALT Fish House offers upscale dining in a minimalist setting and The Big Blue Café, with its quirky décor, is a favorite for breakfast. Most of Arcata’s stores are located around the city's Plaza. Daydream sells trendy clothing, and Humboldt Outfitters sells goods from local artists. Safeway is just half a mile away to the north for groceries.
The neighborhood is a mix of residential and commercial buildings, with sidewalks throughout most of the area. Bungalow, cottage and ranch-style homes are common, and there are some condos and townhouses. Single-family homes tend to have small front yards, and over the summer, fog from the bay rolls in and hovers over the streets. Townhouses and condos tend to sell for between $300,00 and $550,000, and single-family homes go for $350,000 to $650,000. Homebuyers should know that Samoa Boulevard scores a 10 out of 10 on the CAP Crime Index, which is higher than the national average of 4. The neighborhood gets this score because burglary, motor vehicle theft and larceny all score a 10 out of 10, and robbery and other violent crimes score an 8 out of 10.
The area is part of the Arcata School District, with a B-plus rating on Niche. Arcata Elementary School has a B-plus rating, Sunny Brae Middle School earns a B and Arcata High School has a B-plus. The school has a popular arts program called The Arcata Arts Institute, that offers music, performance, and visual arts classes. California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt, called Cal Poly by locals, is 1 mile away and offers a variety of technical programs like nursing and forestry.
The Arcata Oyster Festival, held every June, brings the city a weekend of oysters, live music and beer. Cal Poly is a hub for events, from entertainment to sports like soccer and basketball. The Arcata Plaza hosts a farmer’s market every Saturday and is a hub for other events like live music and performances.
U.S. Route 101 is the primary road in and out of Arcata, with an exit just outside the neighborhood. The route leads to the Mad River Community Hospital, about 4 miles away, and the California Redwood Coast-Humboldt County Airport, about 9 miles away. Homes close to the highway experience more traffic noise. The city is served by the Arcata & Mad River Transit system, which has stops in the neighborhood.
