A woodsy Arcata suburb near the bay shore
Sunny Brae is an Arcata suburb surrounded by Northern California’s wild nature. To the east, hiking trails wind through towering redwoods and Douglas firs, and to the west, coastal wetlands extend out towards the misty waters of Arcata Bay. And while natural scenery is abundant, it’s still close enough to walk or bike to downtown Arcata’s restaurants, parks and boutiques. “The walkability is amazing. You can walk a few blocks to hike in the woods, or walk the other way to get to downtown,” says Realtor Robin Quigley of Exp Realty, a longtime Arcata resident. For those that don’t want to leave the neighborhood, Sunny Brae also has its own grocery store, hardware store, coffee shop and a Mexican restaurant.
Sunny Brae Community Forest
Residents are only a few blocks from Sunny Brae Community Forest, a sprawling redwood park that’s crisscrossed by hiking and biking trails. It’s part of the larger Arcata Community Forest, a 2,350-acre woodland that’s exceedingly popular for outdoor recreation. The neighborhood is also home to Sunny Brae Park, a small community park with benches and plenty of shady trees. West of Sunny Brae are several waterfront trails and parks, including Arcata Bird Sanctuary and the Eureka Bike Trail, where visitors have views of blue bay waters and local wildlife. Golfers can nab an early morning tee time at Baywood Golf & Country Club, a private, 18-hole course that’s only a mile away.
