Living in a family-friendly community of south Arlington
Fairlington, an enduring Arlington County community, started as a federal housing development during and after World War II and has since evolved into a popular, family-friendly neighborhood consisting of condos and townhouses. Fairlington is known for its attractive landscaping, walkability and pet-friendliness, in addition to a "Very diverse and vibrant culture," says Kristin Francis, an Arlington resident and Realtor who has sold homes in the area since 2004. Fairlington is also "Loved by locals for being green energy-friendly and very politically active around legislation," says Francis, adding that, with regular get-togethers and lots of parks, from community gardens to popular dog parks, close by, residents always have plenty to do in the neighborhood. Outside of Fairlington, residents also have access to extensive biking and running trails, shopping that's a draw for the whole region and abundant public transportation to take them anywhere they'd like to go in the DMV area. With a "Convenient location close to everything," families have an array of nearby activities to do with kids, while "young adults and working professionals can get to all the entertainment they want, like trivia night at the local bar," says Francis. Just south of the rest of Arlington, residents of Fairlington enjoy living a laid-back lifestyle in a tight, welcoming community, while still being close to all that the city offers.

Affordable multi-family housing in Fairlington
Fairlington’s signature brick multifamily buildings built in colonial revival styles were first constructed in the 1940s as part of the government’s efforts to create housing for D.C.’s skyrocketing World War II population. Today, the neighborhood's few thousand residential units are served by seven condo associations, and, with an average sales price of $517,000, homes here are about $350,000 less than the average for Arlington. Homebuyers can find a one-bedroom condo in a 1940s original brick building for as low as $400,000 and up to about $550,000 dollars, while an end-unit, two-bedroom townhouse lists for more than $600,000. Though there are no detached single-family homes in the neighborhood, Fairlington continues to draw D.C.-area residents because of its vintage charm, relative affordability and compact design. Most HOAs also offer updated amenities like swimming pools, playgrounds and pickleball courts, so residents often see each other out enjoying activities. The neighborhood is also built so residents can enjoy being outside, from individual patios and decks allowing for private gardens and entertaining space to the ample amount of azalea bushes and Virgina dogwood trees decorating the communal landscape. Along Fairlington’s winding streets, residents will also notice elegant grand oak and maple trees creating a shady canopy- hardwoods that are so coveted that a local historic society created a walking tour based on the neighborhood’s notable trees.
Shopping and dining at Shirlington and Bradlee shopping centers
Residents of Fairlington can walk or bike to explore almost any store they want, with "Opportunities for retail and shopping on both sides of the neighborhood, from the very popular Shirlington to the north and more shops available along King Street to the south," says Francis. Just across King Street, residents can find all the groceries they want or a variety of other stores at the Bradlee Shopping Center. With options like The Fresh Market, Safeway and the local Alexandria Pastry Shop, residents don't need to drive to pick up groceries or grab a local sweet; they can just take a casual stroll if they'd like. For another option, residents can take a short drive or quick bike ride over to the Village at Shirlington to explore local restaurants, do some shopping or catch a movie at the local cinema. One restaurant locals frequent is Busboy and Poets, a combined bookstore and restaurant where residents can read a book while sipping some coffee or meet up with some friends over a meal. After lunch, residents can round out the day by heading to the nearby Signature Theatre to catch a contemporary, live play or musical.
