A peaceful residential community in Arlington
Though it may sound like a prestigious country club community, Golf Club Manor is a quiet Arlington suburb that stands out for its slightly less expensive homes in relation to the surrounding area. The community receives its name from the oldest country club in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, the Washington Golf and Country Club, which is about a mile down Glebe Road. Compared to the average overall home value in the adjacent neighborhood of Old Glebe, which is $1.9 million, Golf Club Manor is a bit more affordable, with an average value of $1.5 million. “The biggest attraction is proximity to D.C.,” says Jane Morrison, real estate agent with Varity Homes who’s lived in Arlington for over 40 years. “If you go straight down Glebe Road and over the river, you’re there.” Residents enjoy a serene environment, as the lack of major thoroughfares shelter the neighborhood from experiencing infamous northern Virginia traffic, and convenient proximity to the nation’s capital. Golf Club Manor also benefits from nearby parks and a highly rated school system.

Public parks and nature trails near Golf Club Manor
Though the neighborhood is known for being close to the Washington Golf and Country Club, most residents probably aren’t purchasing memberships, says Betsy Twigg, Associate Broker with McEnearney Associates, who has served the area for 27 years. The club, which opened in 1893, is notorious for having a yearslong waiting list and an initiation fee that reaches above $150,000. Members of the exclusive club have access to an 18-hole course, swimming pool and tennis courts. For public recreation, locals travel less than a mile out of the neighborhood to Glebe Road Park. Residents meet for basketball games or face off on the tennis courts, and they can also attend an educational program or wander through the pollinator garden at the nearby Gulf Branch Nature Center. The beginning of Gulf Branch Trail, so named because it follows the Gulf Branch waterway that breaks off the Potomac River, is also at Glebe Road Park. This forested path is popular for short post-work strolls, but residents can also use the trail to connect with the Pimmit Run pathway to the northeast and cross the Chain Bridge into D.C.

Brick ramblers and New Traditional homes
Of the housing in the area, Twigg says, “That was all built in the 1960s. Lots of red bricks, bilevels, ramblers and just big houses on pretty decent size quarter acre lots.” She adds, “It’s nice, because it’s sort of very suburban too. You get a lot of ‘house’ for your money.” Twigg notes that homes in Golf Club Manor tend to be more affordable than those in nearby neighborhoods like Chain Bridge Forest since they’re not as new or as customized. Instead, the older homes on quiet, tree-lined streets cost between $1.4 million and $1.6 million. A few newer additions have joined the neighborhood, so homebuyers can find New Traditional properties in neutral hues from the last 10 years. These are often priced between $2.2 million and $2.7 million.

Glebe Road leads to D.C.
Though sidewalks line the streets, Golf Club Manor is very car-dependent. Glebe Road is the primary roadway out of the neighborhood, on which residents can drive about a mile northeast to enter D.C. or south to head toward the heart of Arlington. There are also some public transportation options; bus stops operated by Arlington Transit can be found along Glebe Road. The nearest Metrorail station is in East Falls Church, about 3 miles south. Commuters headed to Washington, D.C., can leave their car in the park-and-ride lot before boarding the Silver or Orange Line. “It’s also very convenient to walk down to Chain Bridge and pick up the towpath that allows you to walk into Georgetown,” Morrison says. Those who opt to walk or bike can head down the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Towpath after crossing Chain Bridge to travel toward downtown D.C. The CAP Index crime tracking database gives Golf Club Manor its lowest crime score, a 1 out of 10.
