You won’t really find any established parks within the Coal Creek Canyon area. That’s because the surroundings themselves more than make up for that, with the mountains, trails and forestry making the area feel like a park in and of itself.
Many of the homes in the area are built on the hillsides and mountainsides, with these mountain retreats constructed in numerous styles. Ranch and bi-level are among the most popular, and some A-frames, cabins and cottages are also tucked along the slopes of Coal Creek Canyon. A large number of the houses in the canyon sell for between $500,000 and $800,000, with a few larger constructions going for over $1 million. The area’s roads are mostly maintained by the county.
“It’s close to town, but it can be far from town,” says Cathy Schneider, a broker associate with RE/MAX Alliance and Denver native whose experience spans the eastern part of Colorado. “There is Eldora Mountain nearby, so there’s access to skiing and lots of hiking. There’s not an abundance of restaurants, but there is a post office, there’s a couple of restaurants and a gas station.”
Students commonly attend Coal Creek Canyon K-8 Elementary School, but it is slated to close after an October 2023 vote by the Jefferson County School Board. Ralston Valley Senior High School remains, though, and hosts students from grades 9-12 while scoring an A rating with Niche. The high school has also received a rating of “Excellent” from the Colorado Department of Education on eight occasions. Other educational institutions in the area and within the school system include Three Creeks Elementary School, ranked at a B+ with Niche, and Bell Middle School, which scores the same rating.
Described by Schneider as a “pretty sleepy” area, Coal Creek Canyon provides residents with stunning views and outdoor opportunities galore despite its somewhat-remoteness. Coal Creek Peak, Scar Top Mountain, Crescent Mountain and Blue Mountain all reside within its boundaries, and hikers can take to the Mountain Lion Trail or the Bridge Creek Trailhead, among other paths, to get out and about. Coal Creek Peak soars more than 8,000 feet into the sky and sits on the edge of the Rocky Mountains’ Front Range, and though it doesn’t have an established trail, its summit is a popular destination for climbers. The mountain is connected to the jagged Crescent Peak via a ridge.
The cities of Golden and Boulder aren’t too hard to reach from Coal Creek Canyon, either. “The accessibility is good,” Schneider says. “Highway 72 runs a long distance. Some of the homes up there will probably be 15-20 miles from Highway 93, which runs north and south from Golden to Boulder. Highway 72 goes off of Highway 93, and that’s how you access the canyon.”
Canyon Coffee sits just off of Highway 72 and serves baked goods, breakfast and lunch to its patrons. Those might include some climbers from Coal Creek Peak, which is just six minutes away from the café.
“There’s something for everyone up there, regardless of your budget,” Schneider says. “It’s got a tremendous variety of housing, regardless of budget. The one big draw that will remain is that it’s quiet, and there’s something for everyone.”
