West Asheville
West Asheville was impacted by Hurricane Helene in September 2024.
This content was created before the hurricane occurred, and we will chronicle the community's recovery in the future.
Hip and happening Haywood
Haywood Road is the pulsing vein of West Asheville. This street is packed with enough shops, bars and cafés to fill a year’s worth of weekends. “If you live close to Haywood Road, you can walk to a lot of places,” Schadler says. “There are lots of vintage stores, vinyl shops, great live music. I’d say that 80 percent of the time, you don’t even need to get in your car.” At the Westville Pub, folks enjoy locally sourced pub grub while sipping craft beer from All Sevens, the onsite brewery. The Admiral is a grungy neighborhood bar by day and a showcase for award-winning chefs by night. Another local favorite is the Universal Joint (known colloquially as “UJ”), home of the smoked trout Reuben. For the basics, Ingles Markets also has a Haywood Street location, known to some locals as “Wingles” due to its West Asheville orientation.Cycling, skating and more at Carrier Park
Carrier Park runs along the French Broad River in the southern part of the neighborhood. There’s a roller-skating rink on site, and residents can sign up for Yoga in the Park on the weekends. Walking trails thread beneath a green canopy of trees, while open fields invite canine visitors to burn off some energy. “It’s kind of like a Central Park for West Asheville,” Schadler says. Carrier Park is also the home of the velodrome, a renovated dirt racing track that’s open to all cyclists. To the east, French Broad River Park provides locals with more walking trails and places to reflect beside the water.Bungalows and brick among the tree-lined streets
Brick ranch-style houses from the 1970s, newer Craftsman-style homes and renovated bungalows line West Asheville’s residential streets. The average home costs $500,000 to $750,000, but sizable modern builds on large lots can fetch over $1 million. Many properties in the northern reaches of the neighborhood offer views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Residential streets branch off of Haywood Road, with profuse tree growth and shrubbery making the roads feel even narrower than they are. Some are so narrow that it’s difficult for two cars to pass one another. Fortunately, most properties include driveways.Over the river to Asheville
Asheville’s River Arts District is a few minutes from West Asheville by car. Depending on where they live, West Asheville residents can easily cross the river to get downtown. Alternatively, they can hop on the Asheville Rides Transit (ART) bus system, which stops along New Leicester Highway and Haywood Road. By crossing the bridge, locals can take advantage of seasonal events like Downtown After 5, Asheville Art in the Park and Shindig on the Green.Toe-tapping tunes at The Odd
It’s not necessary to leave West Asheville to enjoy live performances. The Odd, one of the many funky bars along Haywood Street, stocks its calendar with an impressive lineup of local talent. Closer to the river, AyurPrana Listening Room hosts musicians and dancers from around the globe. And visitors to One World Brewing, a Patton Street speakeasy, enter through a “secret” hobbit hole for musical acts and stand-up comedy. From Emma to Eblen to Erwin
West Asheville kids start at Emma Elementary School before heading to Eblen Intermediate School. Both get a B-minus from Niche. After that, they’ll move on to Clyde A. Erwin Middle School, which gets a B, and the high school of the same name, which gets a B-minus. There’s also a broad array of private schools in the area.Treetop adventures and extreme biking
The Adventure Center of Asheville on Expo Drive offers ziplining tours, mountain biking and an elevated obstacle course. Parents looking for exciting activities for their kids should check out their after-school clubs and summer day camp programs.
