Community-driven borough saves local park 8 miles from Pittsburgh

Aspinwall, 8 miles from Pittsburgh, may seem like any other suburban neighborhood with its rows of tight-knit homes surrounded by rectangular lawns and sidewalks. But this borough has a dedicated community within it. Once a scrap yard and a marina, Aspinwall Riverfront Trail Park was restored by the charitable community to the green landscape it is today. “It was going to be a parking lot,” says Debbie McManus, owner of Lynlott Miniatures Dollhouse Junction. “It was an amazing story, Susan Crookston made it happen. I had her as a customer once; she has a dream and then she wants it. We had to raise a lot of money in a short amount of time, but it did not seem impossible to Susan. Everyone pitched in, children mowed lawns and had lemonade stands. Moms held fundraisers. Then local charitable organizations took an interest and backed it up. There’s a lot of generous people in this area.” Thanks to the locals, the park is now a popular destination for weddings, picnics and enjoying nature. Homes in Aspinwall have personality, be it a brick facing painted in a light yellow, windows with coral accents or an uneven stone facing, there is at least one unique element on each build. A brick path leads residents onto Commercial Avenue where they may window shop or grab a bite to eat. During the day, children may attend school in the Fox Chapel Area School District, listed as one of the best school districts in Pennsylvania. The area receives a 2 out of 10 on the CAP Index crime tracking database. The national average is 4.

Sauer Buildings Historic District

Brick roads line most numbered streets, flanked by flat-faced Colonial Revivals and Foursquares with pointed rooves, oriel windows and shallow porches. Most residences are alley-load homes and leave more room for street parking, which many residents rely on. Homes of cobbled-together concrete and stone come together alongside evenly lain brick builds with copper oriels to create nine homes overlooking Aspinwall known as the Sauer Buildings Historic District. Made by a German architect who constructed several churches in Pittsburgh, Frederick Sauer’s collection of homes is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Aspinwall offers various housing options including multifamily homes and condos, which range from $150,000 to $500,000. Single-family homes range from $150,000 to $425,000, while larger homes with four or more bedrooms range from $500,000 to $750,000.

Miniatures and award-winning pizza

A row of homes is hidden between a pizzeria and a deli, each intricately painted and displaying hand-made furniture and scenes of kittens playing under tables or couples cooking together. One of the last of its kind, Lynlott Miniatures Dollhouse Junction receives visitors from around the world. “What I love is seeing grandparents come in with their grandchildren and experience it together,” says McManus. Next door, Pittsburgh staple Caliente Pizza & Draft House, also known as the Official Pizza of the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Official Pizza of the Pittsburgh Marathon, serves residents sports-themed pies and draft beers. For craft cocktails in an upscale setting, residents visit Cornerstone. After a good meal, residents head to Aspinwall RiverTrail Park to enjoy Oat Milk Ice Cream or a fresh salad at Farmer X Baker. Residents find groceries and other necessities at Giant Eagle Market District along the Allegheny River.

Aspinwall Riverfront Trail Park and Aspinwall Recreation Area

Set to be a parking lot and preserved by the people of Aspinwall, Riverfront Trail Park now serves as an 11-acre green space where residents may rent boats or walk the trails. Tom Otterness’s Playground, a giant bronze figure, encourages children to climb atop its back and slide down its legs. Little league meet-ups and pick-up basketball games are frequent occurrences at the Aspinwall Recreation Area, a haven for sports lovers, with several sports fields and a covered area for team parties and picnics.

Halloween parade and Penguin Parade

“Halloween is like looking at a film. It’s like you’re on a movie set,” says Herrmann. “They all dress up, parents and children.” The Aspinwall Volunteer Fire Department hosts a costume parade outside the municipal building during Halloween, and locals decorate their homes while shelling out gallons of candy. Locals can witness a Penguin Parade at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium or participate in events such as the Sip & Swirl cocktail night and annual holiday events. Those looking to attend religious services may visit Community United Methodist Church, Aspinwall Presbyterian Church and Saint Scholastica Church.

Route 28 and bus stops

Route 28 bisects the borough, connecting to Interstate 279 and making the Pittsburgh International Airport a 25-mile trip. Aspinwall is mainly car-dependent, but there are bike lanes along Route 8 and a few main roadways. The area is walkable, with sidewalks and walking trails, though public transport is limited. Bus stops are only accessible along Freeport Road and within the Giant Eagle Market District.

Aspinwall is an incredible place to live. It's dense and walkable and flat, the homes and yards are beautiful, and the neighbors are kind and warm. Our Riverfront park is beautiful, the borough does an excellent job with maintenance, and transit to downtown is quick & frequent. We absolutely love it here.
