Cobbham was the first planned neighborhood in Athens
Historic doesn’t mean stuffy in Cobbham, where century-old homes exude a sense of fun with their bright colors, eye-catching details and inviting covered porches. Take the T.R.R. Cobb House. This 1830s Greek Revival is bright pink and, thanks to various additions over the years, it now struts its stuff as an “octagon house.” Porches and sidewalks suggest “Hey y'all” hospitality across the neighborhood, and leafy trees provide the shade. Though historic, the neighborhood is considered trendy these days, says Michelle Farmer, a Realtor with the Athens Association of Realtors and an Athens resident since 1996. “It’s a historic area,” says Farmer and “the value of the properties is one of the highest in Athens.”

Historic homes line Cobb Street and Hill Street
Many homes in Cobbham’s Historic District – Federal, Colonial Revival, Greek Revival, Queen Anne, Craftsman and Victorian – date to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Mid-century bungalows, cottages and duplexes also dot the neighborhood. “The architecture is incredible. It’s amazing. All the houses are gorgeous,” says Farmer. Many have bright exteriors, and many are fronted by columns. The neighborhood is popular with professors at the University of Georgia, who bike to campus, says Farmer, and it also draws a large international community. The range for historic homes is $730,000 to $975,000 while prices range from $165,000 to $376,000 for midcentury bungalows and cottages. Cobbham is also very walkable thanks to its sidewalks and compact size.

Oysters and fresh bread are culinary finds in the neighborhood
There are no chain stores in the neighborhood, and it’s easy to walk to local shops. “There’s an old Coca Cola building that currently houses several restaurants and local shops,” says Farmer, and locals can “get their nails done, have coffee then go into two or three shops.” One popular gathering spot is Seabear Oyster Bar. Open since 2014, it serves bivalves harvested up and down the Eastern seaboard. Another hotspot is Big City Bread, which serves breakfast and lunch and has a large patio. Community-owned Daily Groceries Coop is a popular organic grocery in the neighborhood.
