Audubon Forest
Neighborhood in Atlanta, Georgia
Fulton County 30311
Midcentury ranch-style homes on 1-acre wooded lots
Large, tree-filled lots of an acre or more give the community its forested feel. The ranch-style homes here sit far back from the road, and trees and landscaping separate neighbors, creating a sense of privacy. Most homes were built in the 1950s and ‘60s and feature brick exteriors, basements and paved driveways leading to attached garages or carports. A small subdivision of late 20th-century Colonial Revival-style new traditional homes is in the south. Prices typically range from around $280,000 to $680,000.Trails through old-growth forests are nearby
The neighborhood is close to two parks that offer hiking trails through old-growth forests. Lionel Hampton-Beecher Hills Nature Preserve is over 100 acres and has three champion trees, a designation for the city’s largest trees. Trails in the park connect to the Beltline trail network that loops around the city. The over 120-acre Cascade Springs Nature Preserve also has champion trees, and its trail passes along a creek with waterfalls. John A. White Park has a more manicured feel, featuring a nine-hole golf course, a public outdoor swimming pool and a playground. A new senior center is being built here that will include a fitness center and an indoor golf simulator.Public schools earn Bs and Cs
Kids can start school at Beecher Hills Elementary, which earns a B-minus from Niche, and then attend the C-rated Jean Childs Young Middle. At the C-rated Benjamin E. Mays High, students studying French or Spanish can apply to Atlanta Public Schools’ Global Explorers program, which hosts spring break immersion trips to France and Spain. An involved neighborhood association and community church
Audubon Forest has an active neighborhood association that meets monthly at Hoosier Memorial United Methodist Church. The association hosts community cleanups, holiday gift drives and potluck dinners. They also organize a neighborhood walking group that meets each evening. The church has regular events too, like Jazz on the Lawn, which features local musicians and games.A quick drive to downtown and the airport
Audubon Forest is a mostly car-reliant community, but MARTA bus stops, bike lanes and sidewalks on Benjamin E. Mays Drive provide other options for getting around. Interstate 285 — also called The Perimeter — is about 3 miles away, and downtown Atlanta is a 7-mile trip. “It’s easy access to the city, and you don’t have to travel on the interstate,” White says. Grady Memorial Hospital is roughly 7 miles away, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is an 11-mile trip.A district of locally owned restaurants
Cascade’s commercial area sits at the intersection of Benjamin E. Mays Drive and Cascade Road. The Beautiful Restaurant has been a staple here since 1979 and serves Southern cuisine in a casual atmosphere. Oreatha’s at The Point is a more upscale option that offers comfort food from around the world. For a night out, JR Crickets Cascade has live music, trivia nights and line dancing. Nearby grocery stores include Kroger and Nourish and Bloom Market. Walmart and The Home Depot are about 3 miles away.
