Castlewood is a quiet neighborhood, close to shopping
Rick White says Castlewood is a neighborhood people don't want to leave. He moved there 10 years ago and has already lived in two different houses. He lives across the street from a home where his aunt and uncle lived in the ‘90s; they also lived in two different houses during their time in Castlewood. “You’ll find our neighborhood has a lot of people who are on their second or third homes,” says White, president of the Castlewood Civic Association. Castlewood is in the middle of Buckhead, an upscale district of Atlanta that’s just 7 miles from downtown. However, anyone who turns off a main road onto one of the neighborhood’s streets wouldn’t know restaurants and shopping centers lie a few miles in any direction. Without any major cut-through roads running through it, this compact community serves as a peaceful enclave.

Stately homes but casual neighbors in Castlewood
Homes first popped up in Castlewood in the 1950s, but some houses have been torn down and replaced. The streets are lined with a mix of styles, ranging from midcentury ranch homes to newer builds that include Mediterranean, colonial and modern designs. Prices typically range from $1 million to $2.5 million. The neighborhood features plenty of grand homes and polished lawns, but Castlewood retains a casual character. “As a guy from a small town where all your neighbors were friends who would just walk in your back door when they come over, it’s something I never thought I’d have in Atlanta,” White says. “But when my neighbors drop by, they just come in the back door.” Castlewood has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, significantly lower than the national average of 4.

The Castlewood Civic Association organizes anticipated annual events
One way Castlewood residents experience the neighborhood’s tightknit spirit is through community events. They include Easter egg hunts for the kids, winter cocktail socials for the adults and summertime popsicle parties for everyone. A signature event for Castlewood is Halloween night, when parts of Mornington Drive and Rockingham Drive are blocked off to traffic to create a loop of homes for children to trick-or-treat around. The loop, which takes about one hour to complete, even attracts candy hunters from outside the neighborhood. “It’s the perfect number of houses and amount of time,” White says. The Castlewood Civic Association makes these events possible. Membership to the association isn’t required for residents, but more than 80% of households join, White adds.

Castlewood is served by the Atlanta Public Schools district. Students can start off at the neighborhood’s Morris Brandon Elementary School, graded an A-minus by Niche. “The elementary school is right in the center of the neighborhood, and I think that’s a big draw for families with young children,” says Cathy LaMon, a Realtor with Keller Williams, who lives in Buckhead. “Parents walk their kids to school there.” From Morris Brandon Elementary, students can advance to Sutton Middle School, graded a B-plus, and North Atlanta High School, graded an A-minus. Each school offers an International Baccalaureate program, meaning students can participate in the internationally recognized college prep curriculum from kindergarten through 12th grade.
