Castlewood
Stately homes but casual neighbors in Castlewood
Homes first popped up in Castlewood in the 1950s, but some houses have been torn down and replaced. The streets are lined with a mix of styles, ranging from midcentury ranch homes to newer builds that include Mediterranean, colonial and modern designs. Prices typically range from $1 million to $2.5 million. The neighborhood features plenty of grand homes and polished lawns, but Castlewood retains a casual character. “As a guy from a small town where all your neighbors were friends who would just walk in your back door when they come over, it’s something I never thought I’d have in Atlanta,” White says. “But when my neighbors drop by, they just come in the back door.” Castlewood has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, significantly lower than the national average of 4.The Castlewood Civic Association organizes anticipated annual events
One way Castlewood residents experience the neighborhood’s tightknit spirit is through community events. They include Easter egg hunts for the kids, winter cocktail socials for the adults and summertime popsicle parties for everyone. A signature event for Castlewood is Halloween night, when parts of Mornington Drive and Rockingham Drive are blocked off to traffic to create a loop of homes for children to trick-or-treat around. The loop, which takes about one hour to complete, even attracts candy hunters from outside the neighborhood. “It’s the perfect number of houses and amount of time,” White says. The Castlewood Civic Association makes these events possible. Membership to the association isn’t required for residents, but more than 80% of households join, White adds.Students walk to Morris Brandon Elementary School
Castlewood is served by the Atlanta Public Schools district. Students can start off at the neighborhood’s Morris Brandon Elementary School, graded an A-minus by Niche. “The elementary school is right in the center of the neighborhood, and I think that’s a big draw for families with young children,” says Cathy LaMon, a Realtor with Keller Williams, who lives in Buckhead. “Parents walk their kids to school there.” From Morris Brandon Elementary, students can advance to Sutton Middle School, graded a B-plus, and North Atlanta High School, graded an A-minus. Each school offers an International Baccalaureate program, meaning students can participate in the internationally recognized college prep curriculum from kindergarten through 12th grade.Shopping and dining on Howell Mill Road
Castlewood residents are just two miles away from shopping and dining on Howell Mill Road. Local favorites include Fellini’s Pizza and Howell’s Kitchen and Bar for gourmet burgers and creative cocktails on the patio. A coffee shop and a collection of fast-food options are also along the strip. At Howell Mill Village, there’s a Publix, Walgreens, Petco and a yoga studio.A neighborhood relaxation spot at Castlewood Triangle Park
The neighborhood’s Castlewood Triangle Park, on Castlewood Drive, is a sliver of greenery with a Little Free Library that provides a relaxing spot for residents among its cluster of shaded benches. The Carl E. Sanders Family YMCA at Buckhead, on Moore’s Mill Road Northwest, offers a pool, sauna and basketball courts. To the south of Castlewood, the 200-acre Atlanta Memorial Park is home to Bitsy Grant Tennis Center and Bobby Jones Golf Course.Proximity to the Atlanta BeltLine trail
Interstate 75 traces the neighborhood’s western border and following the roadway 7 miles south leads to downtown Atlanta. Those who prefer to cycle or jog can hop on the Atlanta BeltLine 2 miles south of Castlewood at Atlanta Memorial Park. The BeltLine is a 22-mile loop around the city that passes through parks, shopping districts and neighborhoods. Piedmont Atlanta Hospital, a 643-bed facility, is 3 miles away on Peachtree Road Northwest. The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is a 17-mile drive via Interstate 75 South.
