West Cascade is a west Atlanta neighborhood on the rise
West Cascade is an Atlanta neighborhood on the rise. For most of its history, this community of around 1,600 was just 600 acres of unincorporated land in Fulton County. But after residents rallied for annexation in 2006, West Cascade became an officially recognized neighborhood with a new park, ponds and street marker. “We are a hidden gem,” says David Getachew-Smith, a local resident and chairperson of the neighborhood planning unit. "It's a thriving community for raising kids."
A variety of architectural styles in West Cascade houses
Residential properties are divided into three cul-de-sac clusters along Danforth Road, which serves as the main entry route into the neighborhood. Most brick and stucco houses are nearly 3,000 square feet with large lots and two-to-three stories. Colonial and contemporary houses range between $250,000 and $500,000, while most traditional houses range between $350,000 and $900,000. A few modern mansions on the northern edge are valued between $2 million and $2.5 million.
Private and charter school options
West Cascade’s school pipeline starts at Fickett Elementary, which is 4 miles south and earned a C on Niche. Bunche Middle has a student-teacher ratio of 13-to-1 and was also rated a C, while Therrell High is an International Baccalaureate World School and also earned a C on Niche. However, Getachew-Smith says most students in the area don’t go to the public schools, with families instead opting to send their child on the bus to Charles Drew Charter School, which is 15 miles away in East Atlanta and earned an A-minus on Niche. “Most either go to private and charter schools, or they’ll go to one of the Magnet schools in the Atlanta schools system,” he says.
West Cascade Park opened in 2024
While West Cascade’s neighborhood planning unit used to be the only one in the city without a park, that changed in 2024 when the 12-acre West Cascade Park held its grand opening, introducing the community to its first playground and walking trail. “It’s a very low-key park for people who like to take walks and enjoy nature,” Getachew-Smith says. “It’s not the type of park where you’re going to have big events and public sports." Nearby Melvin Drive Park has a ballfield, tennis courts, a playground and a dog park. Also close is the Southwest Arts Center on New Hope Road. Run by the City of South Fulton, the Center hosts stage performances and art classes.
Dining between Camp Creek Station and Cascade Crossing
Residents have two options for local shopping centers. Camp Creek Station is 4 miles west and has chains including Waffle House, Taco Bell and Zaxby’s. It also has a barbershop, a car wash and a local post office. Cascade Crossing is 2 miles east and has fine dining options such as the Blaze steakhouse and Baltimore Crab & Seafood. Gocha’s Breakfast Bar is a local brunch spot that serves breakfast pizza and plays live music on the weekends. There are also two grocery store options in Publix and Walmart.
Public transportation through the West End Station
Bus stops are located along Cascade Road to the north, with the Metropolitan Area Rapid Transit Authority transporting residents 10 miles east to the West End Station. The red and gold rail lines connect to the 24-hour Concentra Urgent Care and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which is 9 miles south.
Environmental factors
West Cascade experiences low noise since Cascade Road sees little traffic. Flooding can occur around the creeks in West Cascade Park.
