What it's like to live in Mount Paran-Northside
Mount Paran-Northside feels more like the countryside than the city, even though it sits on the edge of Northwest Buckhead. The neighborhood’s quiet, winding roads and cul-de-sacs are lined with large homes on spacious lots, and kids can easily ride bikes to the highly rated elementary school. You’ll find plenty of other ways to get outside, whether that means horseback riding at Chastain Park or kayaking along the Chattahoochee River. And even with all this privacy and peace, Mount Paran-Northside’s location near major shopping centers and Interstate 75 keeps city life within arm’s reach.

House styles, lot sizes and prices
Mount Paran-Northside has everything from mid-20th-century Cape Cod cottages and sprawling ranch styles to contemporary mansions built between the 1980s and 2020s. Many of these houses sit on 1- to 5-acre lots, often behind gates and with semi-circular driveways. “Each house feels very secluded,” says Jessica Bailey, a real estate agent with Ansley Real Estate Christie’s International who has sold several homes in the neighborhood. “Shrubs and trees are usually really tall, so you can’t see your neighbors, and because properties are so far back from the road, you don’t really hear cars either.” The median sale price here is around $2.6 million, which is significantly higher than Atlanta’s median of about $425,000. It’s also higher than what you’ll find in other Buckhead neighborhoods, including Margaret Mitchell and West Paces. Most homes here cost between the mid-$1 millions and the mid-$4 millions, and some of the most recently built homes reach the $5 millions.
Beautiful palatial homes can be found throughout Mount Paran-Northside.

Places to get outside
Even though most homes have big yards with enough space for tennis courts and pools, locals also tend to spend a lot of time at nearby public parks. “If people aren’t working or at school, they’re outside,” Bailey says. About 3 miles east of the neighborhood, Chastain Park has an equestrian center, an 18-hole golf course and an amphitheater that hosts big-name musicians. To the west, there’s a portion of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, where you can:
Kayak and tube along the slow-moving water and stop at small islands for picnics
Fish along the rocky shoreline to catch trout and bass
Hike the Palisades trail network, which stretches along bluffs and through a bamboo forest
Warren T. Jackson Elementary has an International Baccalaureate (IB) program for students.
What the local elementary school is like
Mount Paran-Northside is zoned for Atlanta Public Schools. Kids can go to Warren T. Jackson Elementary School, which has two campuses in the neighborhood: one for pre-K through first grade and another for second through fifth grade. The upper school is on a forested property with outdoor classrooms, a fish hatchery and a STEM center. For families looking for private options, Holy Spirit Preparatory School is on the neighborhood’s east side, and Westminster Schools and Pace Academy are also close by.
A local country store and other shopping centers nearby
Locals can choose to join the Mt. Paran-Northside Citizens Association, which basically serves as the local government. “It’s not as socially active as the associations in neighborhoods like Chastain Park or Garden Hills, but it does do a lot when it comes to safety and zoning,” Bailey says. The association focuses on a few key efforts, including:
Providing a security patrol made up of off-duty police officers
Organizing a meal train for the local fire department
Approving film permits, since many homes in the neighborhood have appeared in movies and TV shows
A local country store and other shopping centers nearby
The only commercial space in the neighborhood is Mt. Paran Country Store, a weathered wood building that has been around since 1906. Inside, shelves are stocked with sodas and snacks, and the grill serves burgers and biscuit breakfast sandwiches. “It’s part gas station, part diner,” Bailey says. “Most people don’t even realize it’s there, so the customers are pretty much all neighborhood regulars.” For more shopping and dining options, you can head a few miles west to U.S. Route 41, which is lined with a Sprouts Farmers Market, Cumberland Mall and upscale chain restaurants like Bonefish Grill. Buckhead’s high-end shopping centers, including Phipps Plaza and Lenox Square, are about 5 miles away.

The neighborhood sits just east of I-75, which offers a direct route to Downtown Atlanta. The 10-mile drive to get there typically takes 15 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic. Driving to Sandy Springs, a suburb that's also a major employment hub, usually takes about 20 minutes or less, and you don’t have to get on any highway.
