Auburn is spacious and scenic, yet close to interstates and big cities

Auburn, originally a fishing settlement inhabited by Native Americans, is a rural town in Rockingham County centered around Lake Massabesic. With a population of about 6,000 people, the community enjoys sweeping views of the lake and the wooded landscape. “It’s a picturesque rural community with easy access to highways,” says Margherita Verani, who is the chief executive officer of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Verani Realty with nearly two decades of experience. “People can easily jump on Route 101 and spend the day in Boston, Portsmouth or Hampton Beach.” Residents also have access to recreational activities around the lake, and shopping options are close by in Manchester.

Modern condos and 20th century styles usually sit on at least an acre

Auburn has a lush, wooded landscape, with single-family homes nestled in the verdant woodlands. Although there are some homes from the early 1800s, most properties were built in the second half of the 20th century. Comprised of ranch-styles, Cape Cods, Colonial Revivals and split-levels, smaller houses here typically start from $300,000 and go up to $650,000. Properties that are over 3,000 square feet or built post-2000s may go between $700,000 and $1.5 million. The median sale price is approximately $750,000, which is nearly double the national median. Houses typically have one or two-acre lots, and some may even have over 10 acres. There is a 55-plus community with stand-alone condominiums, and prices are from $600,000 to over $850,000 with monthly HOA fees. The Village at Mt. Miner, a subdivision comprised of custom-built single-family and detached homes, has properties that are over $1 million. “Parcels have minimum starts of an acre, and inventory is very low,” Verani says. “Auburn is less populated than some of its surrounding communities, and listings usually go relatively quickly.”

Residents get active at parks and explore nature close to home

The town has about half a dozen parks, athletic fields, playgrounds and an ice-skating rink. The recreation department offers youth and adult programs year-round, ranging from sports leagues to arts and crafts workshops and Pilates lessons. Lake Massabesic is the area’s water source and does not allow for swimming, but non-invasive boating, such as kayaking and fishing, is permitted. Rockingham Recreational Trail and Barringer Cliffs Trail have access points near the lake, and the Massabesic Center, a wildlife sanctuary, has an additional 5 miles of trails, pollinator gardens, wildlife viewing opportunities and environmental education programs.

The town’s recreation department organizes a summer concert series from June to August. In September, the community celebrates Auburn Night with local food trucks and a fireworks show.
