Remote town in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains
Augusta, a remote town 80 miles from the Montana’s capital, has houses and buildings that date back to its 1880’s founding. The town is surrounded by ranch land, mountainous horizons, and wildlife like grizzly bears, elk and moose. “The scenery sells itself,” says Theresa Taylor, a Realtor with Russel Country Realty and Augusta resident since 1985. Also, she was a schoolteacher before becoming a real estate agent. “We’re in the foothills of the Rockies, and some of the mountains hang onto snow into the summer.” Augusta has a community garden, most residents buy eggs and milk from local farmers, and the local library and youth center offer kids programs. Almost all the businesses are located along main street, and everyone in town tends to go to the same places, whether it’s the Buckhorn Bar or the Augusta Community Church. “We’ve got four bars and four churches in Augusta,” says Taylor. “So, we’ve got a good balance.”

Gateway into wild Montana
Augusta is an entrance into Montana’s vast, untamed landscape. The Bob Marshall Wilderness is a 1.5 million-acre nature destination for Montanans and tourists. “The Bob,” as locals call it, is about 20 miles west of Augusta. It's a common sight to see backpackers or horseback riders exploring the area. Augusta is also a good staging ground for hunters. “Hunting season is big in our town,” says Taylor. With dude ranches like JJJ Wilderness Ranch, this area is open for camping, hunting and more outdoor adventures through the Montana wilderness. The Sun River Game Range, a hunting reserve about 15 miles away, is another hunting spot.

Dude ranches and rodeo nights
The biggest event in Augusta is the American Legion Rodeo, typically held on the last weekend in June. People come from all over the state to enjoy music, food and rodeo games. “Our town goes from 300 people to 4,500 people,” says Taylor.
Four bars, one grocery store
Most people don’t need to leave town for supplies, thanks to Allen’s Manix Store, the local grocer. “Our little store has everything you could want,” says Taylor. Restaurant-wise, people go to Buckhorn Bar, Western Bar, Blue Pine Wine or Lazy B. “Most people go to the Buckhorn Bar. It’s a big log building that’s been there forever," says Taylor. "I’ve never seen it,” but I've heard of people riding a horse through the Buckhorn Bar a time or two.” The Western Bar has also seen its fair share of excitement. “Twenty years ago, there were about 200 people in there after a derby, and the floor collapsed. And someone yelled, ‘I didn’t spill my drink!’” says Taylor. Augusta is home to a few shops, like Forge, an antique store, and Lightning Bug Coffee Shop & Boutique, which sells beverages, clothing and jewelry.

No new houses
Augusta is a small town, and that’s not likely to change in the near future. “We’re surrounded by third and fourth generation ranchers,” says Taylor. “And they’re not subdividing anytime soon.” There are a couple hundred homes in town, all of which have a view of the Rocky Mountains from their backyards. Housing styles in Augusta tend to be farmhouse, ranch-style or bungalows. Properties typically sell for $250,000 to 450,000.

One school in Augusta
The Augusta School District has one school building for kindergarten through twelfth grades and serves only about 100 students each year. Augusta Elementary School is rated A by Niche, while Augusta High School has a B-minus. At the high school, youth sports are popular, particularly baseball, volleyball and track and field.

An emergency landing field for planes; two roads for cars
Highway 287 runs north to south through the town, and many residents take this route to head to Helena, about 80 miles away. There isn’t any public transportation in this remote town, so having a car is necessary. Augusta has its own airplane landing field, but there’s no air traffic control tower or security checkpoints. “There’s an airport for emergency landings in somebody’s field,” says Taylor. The Great Falls International Airport is about 60 miles away.
