Barton Creek flowing through its namesake neighborhood
Over its 40 miles, Barton Creek snakes its way through the Hill Country southwest of Austin, eventually bordering the neighborhood that shares its name. Today, the waterway continues to shape the Barton Creek neighborhood, with the recreation surrounding it a major selling point for the area. Combined with the natural beauty, Barton Creek’s convenience to downtown and wide variety of home styles and prices make it an attractive neighborhood for many families in the Austin suburbs.

Hiking the Barton Creek Greenbelt
Bordered by Barton Creek Wilderness Park and the Barton Creek Greenbelt, the neighborhood has no dearth of outdoor areas to explore. Residents access the over 12 miles of hiking and biking paths via several trailheads placed throughout Barton Creek. Locals love cooling off in the creek’s natural pools at both Sculpture Falls and Twin Falls, though water levels might be low during a dry spell. The Greenbelt leads north to the nearby Zilker Park, home to baseball fields, sand volleyball courts, the Barton Springs Municipal Pool and a botanical garden.
High marks for Eanes schools
Students in the Barton Creek neighborhood attend school in the Eanes Independent School District, the best school district in Texas according to Niche. “Those Eanes ISD schools are very highly rated,” says Greg Walling, a Broker Associate with Moreland Properties in Austin. “They’re some of the best schools in the country, definitely in Texas.” Kids start at either Eanes Elementary School or Cedar Creek Elementary School before heading to Hill Country Middle School and Westlake High School, with each school receiving an A-plus grade from Niche. One of the highest-rated high schools in the state, Westlake High School offers nearly 40 Advanced Placement courses for its students.

Biking and driving to downtown Austin
Just south of Lady Bird Lake, Barton Creek sits within a 5-mile drive of downtown and its employers, festivals, and events. The neighborhood also has easy access across the area, with the MoPac Expressway intersecting with Loop 360 within its bounds. The MoPac Expressway can take residents north towards The Domain, where many of Austin’s tech companies have either moved or set up a second office. “The traffic here isn’t great,” Walling says. “It’s better than big city traffic but it’s a minor drawback for Austin, unfortunately.” The neighborhood lacks consistent public transportation, but residents who prefer two wheels to four are in luck, with the neighborhood’s trails and protected bike lanes across the river into downtown. Locals can also access the nearby Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, which offers flights to destinations across the country.
