Barton Creek

Hiking the Barton Creek Greenbelt
Bordered by Barton Creek Wilderness Park and the Barton Creek Greenbelt, the neighborhood has no dearth of outdoor areas to explore. Residents access the over 12 miles of hiking and biking paths via several trailheads placed throughout Barton Creek. Locals love cooling off in the creek’s natural pools at both Sculpture Falls and Twin Falls, though water levels might be low during a dry spell. The Greenbelt leads north to the nearby Zilker Park, home to baseball fields, sand volleyball courts, the Barton Springs Municipal Pool and a botanical garden.High marks for Eanes schools
Students in the Barton Creek neighborhood attend school in the Eanes Independent School District, the best school district in Texas according to Niche. “Those Eanes ISD schools are very highly rated,” says Greg Walling, a Broker Associate with Moreland Properties in Austin. “They’re some of the best schools in the country, definitely in Texas.” Kids start at either Eanes Elementary School or Cedar Creek Elementary School before heading to Hill Country Middle School and Westlake High School, with each school receiving an A-plus grade from Niche. One of the highest-rated high schools in the state, Westlake High School offers nearly 40 Advanced Placement courses for its students.Diverse homes in Barton Creek
Along the wide, tree-lined suburban streets of Barton Creek, the neighborhood features diverse home styles separated by subdivision. Brick ranchers dominate one community, while another has a number of two-level homes with brick columns. Throughout the neighborhood, a smattering of the original houses have been demolished or renovated to become new, modern homes. An older but refurbished ranch home starts around $1 million, whereas a newer contemporary build goes up to $4 million. The outskirts of the neighborhood near commercial areas also feature condo developments, which often sell between the mid-$300,000s and mid-$700,000s.Shopping at Barton Creek Square
If indoor malls are dying, Barton Creek Square never got the memo. The shopping center is alive and well, with over 180 shops and restaurants including Macy’s, Dillards, and an Apple Store. Residents can also get shopping done at the neighborhood’s West Woods Shopping Center, with a CVS and a Michaels, while the neighborhood’s first Trader Joe’s sits down the street for groceries. Neighborhood residents get breakfast tacos at Tacodeli, one of Austin’s favorite chains. And just a few minutes from the neighborhood, Blue Dahlia Bistro serves French-inspired dishes in a bright interior.Browsing the Barton Creek Farmers Market
Held every Saturday in the Barton Creek Square parking lot, the Barton Creek Farmers Market was established in 1987 as Austin’s first farmers market. Its list of accolades includes support from Wolfgang Puck and high national rankings from the Audubon Society. Locals browse the fresh produce or buy a snack from the many vendors, along with live music and entertainment. There’s also plenty of live music and entertainment each fall in the nearby Zilker Park, as the Austin City Limits festival brings big-name artists to Austin for a two-weekend extravaganza.Biking and driving to downtown Austin
Just south of Lady Bird Lake, Barton Creek sits within a 5-mile drive of downtown and its employers, festivals, and events. The neighborhood also has easy access across the area, with the MoPac Expressway intersecting with Loop 360 within its bounds. The MoPac Expressway can take residents north towards The Domain, where many of Austin’s tech companies have either moved or set up a second office. “The traffic here isn’t great,” Walling says. “It’s better than big city traffic but it’s a minor drawback for Austin, unfortunately.” The neighborhood lacks consistent public transportation, but residents who prefer two wheels to four are in luck, with the neighborhood’s trails and protected bike lanes across the river into downtown. Locals can also access the nearby Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, which offers flights to destinations across the country.
