Good grazing in Govalle
Govalle derives its name from the Swedish word for “good grazing land,” an apt name for a burgeoning neighborhood with restaurants on nearly every block. Far from the former cattle ranch it used to be, Govalle (pronounced “go-valley") has seen tremendous growth over the past 14 years as Austinites move eastward. “It’s a beautiful area, and the walkability in general is a very popular aspect of the east side,” says Brett Ponds, a Realtor and manager at Pauly Presley Realty. Numerous restaurants and artist studios compliment the natural beauty in and around Govalle, including its southern border, the Colorado River.
The De Nada Cantina is a popular spot for tacos and queso in Austin, Texas.
Restaurants and shops on East Cesar Chavez Street
Many locals walk to Flitch Coffee in the morning, which serves up fresh lattes and breakfast tacos out of a converted 1952 Spartan trailer. Locals can hop between bars and restaurants on East Cesar Chavez Street, starting with drinks at Central Machine Works before tucking into modern comfort food at Sawyer & Co. Satisfy any sweet tooth at OMG Squee, an Asian American dessert shop featuring mochi donuts, macarons and taiyaki sundaes. Late night revelers can go to Justine’s for elegant French brasserie staples in an edgy yet romantic setting. Residents can grab groceries at H-E-B on East Seventh Street or pick up fresh produce at Boggy Creek Farm. There’s also Tillery Street Plant Company and East Austin Succulents, two neighboring plant nurseries that are treasured by the community. “The big part about Austin is that we like to have local biz owners. We’re not huge fans of huge chain type restaurants,” Ponds says. “That’s why you get people who go to OMG Squee or Tillery rather than getting your plants from Home Depot.”
Plenty of new build modern homes can be found in the Govalle neighborhood in Austin, Texas.
New, modern homes
Like much of Austin’s east side, homes in Govalle are in high demand and prices have increased significantly in the past 10 years. “(The east side) was the last area closest to downtown that was developed, so there’s a lot of demand for it,” Ponds says. “And a lot of it is (demolishing) old houses and building new construction (on top of it).” A renovated two-bedroom ranch-style home that spans about 1,000 square feet can cost $450,000, but most homes start around $650,000. A new condo in a gated community can cost $800,000, while Modernist new builds start around $1 million. “The Austin east side has been immensely popular and growing in the past 14 years, which has been met with mixed reviews, based on the socioeconomic impact of it,” Ponds says. “The transition has become a lot of businesses have moved over here — event spaces, breweries, restaurants, things like that — so it’s increasing the walkability. But it’s also, again, having that impact on the neighborhood that some people consider positive, some people don’t consider positive.”
Climb high at Austin Bouldering Project
Govalle Neighborhood Park is a 26-acre city staple where residents come to walk, jog, picnic and play with pups. Hikers can access the Southern Walnut Creek Trail from the park, which trails Boggy Creek and connects to the East Boggy Creek Greenbelt. One of Govalle’s most popular amenities is Austin Bouldering Project, a 50,000-square-foot gym dedicated to free climbing located on Springdale Road. Just down the street is Canopy, an artist complex housing dozens of artist studios and galleries. The complex participates in the annual Austin Studio Tour, a city-wide event spanning multiple weekends that celebrates the area’s artisans. “It’s super Austin-y because you get to go to the artist, walk in the studio and talk to them and hang out with them, and obviously check out their work,” Ponds says.
Eastside Early College, Austin, thrives on community involvement, shaping future leaders.
Get a diploma and a degree at Eastside Early College High School
Kids can attend Govalle Elementary School, which receives a C from Niche, before attending the A-graded Kealing Middle School. Teens can go to the C-plus-graded Eastside Early College High School, which offers career classes and the opportunity to earn an associate degree through the Early College High School Program.
Govalle is just east of downtown Austin.
Less than 3 miles from downtown Austin
Springdale Road is a major thoroughfare for Govalle residents, as are East Cesar Chavez Street and East Seventh Street. Govalle is less than 3 miles from downtown Austin and about 4 miles from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. While many residents own a car, the CapMetro bus system has stops on Airport Boulevard, Springdale Road and North Pleasant Valley Road. Locals also have access to Interstate 35 and Highway 183.
Crime
Govalle receives a 10 out of 10 on the CAP Index for burglary and larceny compared to the overall U.S. score of 4 out of 10, indicating the area has a higher than average level of theft. “Austin itself is considered a relatively safe major city,” Ponds explains. “One thing we have in abundance is a lot of petty theft because we have events every other weekend and a huge nightlife scene and multiple universities. But outside of that… it’s very comfortable.”
