Campus Park
Department stores, restaurants and groceries at Gosford Village
Gosford Village is a premier shopping area in West Bakersfield. Home to department stores like Sam's Club and Kohl's, this commercial center has restaurant chains, retail and a pharmacy on a 73-acre lot in Campus Park. The Marketplace is another area with over 50 retailers, including brand-name shops, restaurants and a movie theater, about 4 miles north. “Gosford Village has all these stores, food places and it’s expanding,” says Katie Vasquez, a specialist at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County. “I grew up in this part of town. It’s very family oriented, and it's a social place to be.” Spencer's Cafe serves a classic American breakfast in a diner decorated in vintage posters. Salty's BBQ offers a menu of smoked meat dishes with a patio or seating inside an old locomotive car. Sorella Ristorante is an Italian steakhouse with seafood pasta dishes in a dim dining room with classical décor. Walmart Supercenter is on Gosford Road, and WinCo Foods is another supermarket on Panama Lane.Mediterranean homes with columns and verandas
In classic Bakersfield fashion, Campus Park architecture holds Spanish and Mediterranean influence through details like stucco exteriors and red-tile roofs. Some houses have elements like round columns supporting low-pitched verandas. Tradewinds Estates is a community along Harris Road, with 2,000 square-foot properties built in the 2010s. Housing styles include Craftsman, New Traditional and ranch-style homes. Home prices range from $350,000 to $600,000. Ranch-style homes fall between $350,000 and $450,000. Craftsman homes list from $400,000 to $500,000. New Traditional homes sell for $450,000 to $600,000. "Campus Park is very walkable, and people don't drive through it as often because of its layout," Gordon says.City parks at the center of community life
Communities surround the manicured meadow at Tradewinds Park, where cherry blossom trees shower the ground with petals in the Spring. Tradewinds Park is a central green space with beach volleyball, horseshoe pits and a picnic area under a gazebo. Campus Park South has tennis and pickleball courts by a duck pond, while Campus Park North has a large playground in a sand pit with multiple structures. Bridle Creek Park is a large area with open fields traversed by sidewalk paths leading to a playground and a basketball court. The Bridle Creek Dog Park is a fenced-in play area with park benches and young trees. Greystone Park is another area with jungle gyms and a splash pad with a bucket mechanism. The Boys & Girls Club of Kern County provides courses for local youth in subjects like sports, fitness and nutrition.Top schools in Campus Park
Panama-Buena Vista Union and Kern High School District serve students in the area. Sing Lum Elementary School earns a B grade from Niche and offers instrumental and vocal music education. Tevis Junior High School receives a B grade. Stockdale High School earns an A grade, whose student body combines for an average SAT score of 1240.Attractions and happenings
The Well is a comedy club with popular regional acts in one of the largest venues outside of downtown. The Empty Space, a donation-based community theater, puts on productions for dramatic plays, live music and art exhibits.Getting around the city
Golden Empire Transit (GET) provides public transportation with four bus stops accessible to Campus Park on Gosford Road. Gosford Road is a main artery leading north, reaching Truxtun Avenue and connecting to Downtown, around 11 miles east. The San Joaquins Amtrak connects Bakersfield to Oakland, Sacramento and Stockton, while longer passages join routes to San Francisco and Los Angeles. State Route 99 is the city's primary expressway, and Interstate 5 is a major West Coast interstate about 10 miles west. Los Angeles is roughly 113 miles south on Interstate 5, and the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) offers air travel to Bakersfield.Air quality in Bakersfield
Bakersfield is the oil capital of California. Because the city is a base for agriculture, petroleum and oil industries, it can sometimes struggle with air pollution, due to a high volume of days with poor air quality annually. However, steps are being taken to increase air quality, like rebates for electric vehicles through the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District.
