Being less than a 10-minute drive from Bakersfield’s city center means Oakridge residents are never far from downtown events. The West Coast Beer & Taco Festival is an annual event for the 21-and-over crowd that offers unlimited samples of beer and tacos from dozens of local restaurants and beer manufacturers. Every September, the Bakersfield Village Fest is held on the grounds of the Kern County Museum. Banderas Burger is a popular food truck serving up juicy handhelds on Virginia Avenue.

Kern County produces more oil than any other county in the United States. Because Bakersfield is home to agricultural and petroleum industries — both of which have high emission rates — the area often struggles with elevated levels of air pollution.
