A small, San Joaquin Valley suburb
Polo Grounds is a San Joaquin Valley suburb 7 miles from downtown Bakersfield. The neighborhood falls under two well-regarded school districts, has easy access to the local highway— California State Route 58—and has homes that sit close together with manicured lawns. “Polo Grounds offers residents a quiet neighborhood with a bit more land and freedom since there is no homeowners association compared to many of the newer communities in Bakersfield,” says William Gordon, a Realtor with Watson Realty and a lifelong local in the real estate industry since 2007. It’s a small, tight-knit neighborhood with a community center and theatre, The Stars Playhouse. It’s all near Polo Park, a 40-acre greenspace that’s 2 miles, or 5 minutes, north. “Polo Park is the hub for kids sports for all of Bakersfield, regardless of where you live,” says Erik Van Denk, a Realtor with Central Valley Property Advisors who’s worked in the area for nearly two decades.
Craftsman homes with Victorian features
Homebuyers can choose between ranch-style homes and two-story homes with dormer windows and gabled roofs. Some two-story homes have Victorian-inspired architecture, while others are classic Craftsman homes. One-story homes are priced between $250,000 and $450,000, while larger properties range from $450,000 to $750,000. Many homes are separated by stone gate fences and shaded by tall oak trees. No matter the home style, streets have a classic suburban feel with wide sidewalks, manicured front lawns. When it comes to parking, people can put their vehicles in garages, driveways or on the street.

Air pollution in Bakersfield
Bakersfield’s air quality is polluted because of its geography. It’s positioned in the San Joaquin Valley near the mountains, where polluted air can get trapped. Dust can also get trapped in the air since a heavy farming area surrounds Bakersfield. The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District has programs like Park and Ride, which encourage developers to build commuter lots and decrease vehicle usage.
