A gated lakefront community in Southwest California
Riverlakes is a gated community in Northwest Bakersfield, 6 miles from downtown. It has classic amenities such as a namesake golf course and park, walkable streets, well-regarded schools and many nearby shopping centers. Riverlake is a manmade body of water in the neighborhood's heart, boosting residents' outdoor activity. “Everyone wants to move to Riverlakes for the lakefront lifestyle,” says Autumn Mitchell, Realtor with Scott Tobias Real Estate, who was born and raised in the area. “It’s the largest manmade lake in Bakersfield and features quite a few amenities, like a recreational pool, a lap pool and hot tubs.”
Spanish Revival homes shaded by palm trees
People can choose between one-story homes with brick exteriors and gable roofs and two-story Spanish Revival homes. Smaller properties are priced between $350,000 and $500,000, while larger ones range from $400,000 to $550,000. “It’s an older neighborhood; The newest homes were built in the early 2000s,” says Erik Van Denk, a Realtor with Central Valley Property Advisors who’s worked in the area for nearly two decades. The neighborhood has suburban features such as wide sidewalks shaded by palm trees and manicured front lawns resembling golf courses. Properties have decent-sized driveways that can fit two vehicles and one-car garages.

Studying at highly-ranked Centennial High School
The Norris Elementary School District, graded B from Niche and the Kern High School District, graded B-plus, serve Riverlakes students. They can attend William B. Bimat Elementary School before advancing to Norris Middle School, which has an annual Fall Festival dance. Both schools earned a B-plus from Niche. Kids may move on to Centennial High School, which received an A-minus and is ranked No. 4 among Bakersfield's best public high schools. Mitchell says it also has a notable robotics club. “People around Bakersfield choose their homes based on the high school district, even though they are all good schools,” she says. “Centennial specifically is known for its robotics program.” California State University, Bakersfield, is 4 miles south. Riverlakes has no private schools, but RiverLakes Community Church is the local place of worship, with Sermons for specific age groups.

Air pollution in Bakersfield
Bakersfield’s air quality is polluted because of its geography. It’s positioned in a valley near the mountains, which traps polluted air. Also, since it’s surrounded by a heavy farming area, dust tends to get trapped in the air. The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District has programs like Park and Ride, which encourage developers to build commuter lots and decrease vehicle usage.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
