Nearby oil refineries and farms — the financial lifeblood of the region — also cast a dark shadow on quality of life. “In winter we have more smog issues. In the spring and fall, it’s the farming that causes dust, particularly when almonds are harvested,” Gordon, the local Realtor, says. “The climate and air quality keep things affordable.”

Residents have easy access to several major thoroughfares, including Ming Avenue, which bisects the neighborhood and serves as the main access point when heading east into Bakersfield proper. Route 58 borders the area to the north, while freeway access via California State Route 99 is a quick drive away.
