Rising out of the oil fields
Located in a county where one in seven workers is employed by or tied to the oil and natural gas industry, South San Lauren sits on the edge of it all. With oil refineries, pipeline companies, machine works and other industrial businesses to the south and east, this small neighborhood is an island of green suburbia. “This is a community built during the housing boom of the early 2000s,” says Shanti Brinsfield, a Realtor with Watson Realty who has 21 years of experience selling homes in Bakersfield. “Land was hard to come by, especially in the Northwest part of Bakersfield. So builders transformed part of this commercial area into the nice neighborhood it is today.”
Suburban oasis
Spanish-style homes accented by palm trees and tile roofs line the streets of South San Lauren. Built-in two- and three-car garages with wide enough driveways to handle RV parking look out to suburban sidewalks with the occasional parked car. Backyards are private, fenced off and large enough for a swimming pool. And the lawns are a brilliant shade of green. Home prices range from $300,000 to $450,000, and the cost of living is often offset by solar panels — many homes in Bakersfield have them — or assumable lower-interest-rate FHA loans if the seller already has one.

Bakersfield transit resources
The 82 and 84 city buses travel along Rosedale Highway about 2 miles south, and the 99 freeway is about the same distance to the west. Meadows Field Airport is 6 miles to the north, and the Bakersfield train station, where Amtrak stops, is less than 5 miles southeast.
In and out food and more
The Shops at the Promenade along Rosedale Highway features a Target, a Walmart Supercenter and a Vallarta supermarket. A Lowe’s is nearby, and so is In-N-Out Burger, a classic hamburger chain that promises no heat lamps, freezers or microwaves are used to deliver the freshest meals to customers. Raising Cane’s, a fast-food chain specializing in chicken fingers and crinkle-cut fries, is on Coffee Road, and just up the street is Buffalo Wild Wings, which offers 26 signature sauces and dry rubs.

Walkable San Lauren Park
San Lauren Park, the neighborhood’s main recreational area, is only a block or two from most homes and features basketball courts, a children’s playground and a water play area. “I love taking my son here to use on the toddler play equipment,” says Michael McCracken, broker/owner of Michael McCracken and Associates, who has been buying and selling real estate in Bakersfield for 18 years. “The park has a wonderful dog park and run. The small Frisbee golf course is fun, too.” Emerald Park, the next closest, is larger, with a multi-purpose field, a large playground, and a picnic shelter for gatherings.

Oil pumps and pipelines are a common sight in South San Lauren — about 70% of California’s oil and almost all of its natural gas is produced within Kern County. Much of that industry is located north of the Kern River. In fact, a pipeline crosses under Mohawk Street within feet of the South San Lauren subdivision.
