Homes with character
Homes in Christopher evoke a feeling of old-world charm, most built between 1920 and 1950. Single-family Cape Cods, cozy cottages, bungalows and larger Craftsman-style homes, Dutch colonials and American foursquares line the narrow streets with little traffic of this quiet neighborhood. Homes here come with a lot of character, such as stained-glass windows, hardwood floors, built-ins and crystal door knobs. “The lots are a decent size, too, not something you find all over Baltimore,” Meyd says. “The closer you get to downtown, the more you find all rowhouses. So having a little more yard is nice.” Prices in Christopher vary from the $150,000s for a fixer-upper to the mid $300,000s for a newly renovated home.Golf course and ball fields
About a mile from Christopher, Mount Pleasant Golf Course features a range of options and services for golfers at all skill levels. Residents interested in making new friends can join one of the course’s amateur leagues. A golf academy, private lessons and junior golf camps and clinics are all offered. Locals head to North Harford Park, just across East Northern Parkway, for its playground, basketball courts, baseball fields and soccer field.Schools where students achieve
Students living in Christopher attend Baltimore City Public Schools, including Hamilton Elementary/Middle School, which received a C-plus from Niche, and City Neighbors High, another C school. Hamilton Elementary/Middle fosters an environment that values social-emotional learning, arts integration, STEM education and academic rigor. At City Neighbors High, sophomores and juniors can explore their interests by interning at local businesses or organizations to gain a real work understanding of what it’s like to work in a particular field.Events at The Lot
On Tuesday afternoons, the seasonal Hamilton-Lauraville Main Street Farmer’s Market is held at The Lot across from Safeway. The market features local farms, vendors, live music and drinks. Residents can also enjoy free summer concerts at The Lot. The community building there is also used for programming, such as yoga classes, tango lessons and workshops.Riding, biking or driving
Maryland Transit Administration (or MTA) buses ride past Christopher on Harford Road, East Northern Parkway and Echodale Avenue. Because Christopher is only 7 miles from downtown, it offers a handful of dedicated bike lanes. Only 3.5 miles east, Interstate 95 connects to Washington, D.C., 50 miles southwest, and Philadelphia, 100 miles northeast. Downtown is just 7 miles away, and Baltimore-Washington International Airport is a 20-mile drive.Exploring Harford Road
Only a 10-minute walk for most residents, Harford Road features a mix of clubs, eateries, local shops and boutiques. The Flower Cart is a local florist, the place to stop in or order flowers for a special occasion. Zeke’s Coffee is just a few blocks away, which started as a table at the local farmers market and grew into the small-batch, family-owned coffee roastery that it is today. Further on down, Maggie’s Farm serves thoughtful provisions and cocktails in a farm-to-table setting, and Koco’s Pub, a few doors down, features award-winning crab cakes made fresh daily by hand. For groceries, the local Safeway supermarket is next to Maggie’s.Downtown and the Baltimore waterfront
When it's time for a change of pace, Christopher is only 7 miles from the Baltimore Museum of Art, Camden Yards, where the Oriole’s play, the National Aquarium, and the waterfront promenade. “On the east side of Baltimore, you’re close to downtown restaurants, bars and the arts scene,” Meyd says. “You’re also close to the water, the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. You can enjoy a very suburban life in Christopher, yet you’re so close to all the main Baltimore attractions.”
