Walkability and history in southwest Baltimore
Once known as Little Lithuania, the neighborhood of Hollins Market is centered around the long-standing public shopping center from which it takes its name. This collection of row houses is close to many of Charm City’s famous landmarks. “It’s an extremely convenient neighborhood, right in southwest Baltimore,” says Charles Billig, owner of A.J. Billig and Company and lifelong Baltimore resident, who has sold real estate in the city for 18 years. “It has good proximity to the stadiums and the harbor, and it’s not far from the University of Maryland Baltimore medical campus.” Despite the easy access to all manner of modern amenities, Hollins Market retains some measure of its historic flavor. “There’s still a small stable for the horses there, from when they pulled apple carts around,” Billig adds. “It’s not uncommon to see a chicken or a pig still wandering the streets around the neighborhood.”

The Inner Harbor is between 12 and 15 blocks away.” Residents also have access to Route 40, which heads east 2.5 miles to the Johns Hopkins Hospital. The Baltimore-Washington Parkway is also close by, providing the most direct route to Baltimore Washington International Airport, 9.5 miles south.
The historic houses of southwest Baltimore
Prospective buyers in Hollins Market will be greeted by a familiar Baltimorean sight. “Most homes in the neighborhood are row houses. Very few are semi-detached,” Billig says. “Some were built a little later, around the 1980s and 1990s, but most are over 100 years old.” Two- and three-story units are available, featuring red brick and gray stone facades and short front stoops. Prices begin around $125,000 and rise as high as $400,000 for fully renovated units close to the University of Maryland Baltimore’s campus. The paved sidewalks beyond the porches are lined with leafy ginkgo trees, which turn a vibrant gold when autumn comes around.
