Beyond the Baltimore row house
Tuscany-Canterbury offers a diverse collection of housing options. “It really began to be developed after 1900,” O’Neill says. “The Tudor style was quite popular at the time. Originally, the neighborhood was full of great big houses facing Charles Street. Those have mostly been replaced by apartment buildings, but a few are still standing, split into townhouses and flats.” Prospective owners can choose from the Tudor-inspired townhouses that remain, detached brick Colonials with spacious yards and condos in towering Mediterranean complexes. Despite drawing from German, English and Italian designs, the homes here are unified seamlessly by the sprawling greenery that flourishes throughout the neighborhood. Home prices begin around $400,000 and rise as high as $775,000, while condos begin around $225,000 and can soar to over $2 million, depending on the property’s size, condition and proximity to the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus. The Stony Run and Wyman Park
The western border of this neighborhood bumps up against Stony Run Park, where a 3-mile walking trail traces the path of an urban stream through the Baltimore woodlands. Both the path and the stream continue to Wyman Park, part of the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus. Students of the university can often be found picnicking on the open lawns, jogging along the trails or enjoying the view of the stream on benches beneath the trees. This park also features several athletic fields, baseball diamonds and playgrounds where children can compete in rec league games or simply spend a Saturday swinging on the monkey bars.Education in Hopkins’ backyard
Children in this neighborhood begin at Roland Park Elementary/Middle School, which Niche rates a B-plus. Roland Park offers a wide range of clubs and activities for enrolled students, including a robotics club and a performance ukulele ensemble. Students may then choose which of the city’s public secondary schools to attend. Among the closest are Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, which earns an A, and Western High, which scores a B-minus. Both share one campus and are Blue Ribbon Award-winning schools offering AP and college preparatory courses. In addition, private schools are available. “The Calvert School up there is their big claim to fame,” O’Neill says. Calvert is a storied Baltimore institution that earns an A-plus from Niche and has served students from kindergarten through grade 8 since its founding in 1872.What’s happening at Hopkins?
The Johns Hopkins University’s Homewood campus offers many exciting entertainment opportunities at the doorstep of Tuscany-Canterbury. The Baltimore Museum of Art, founded over a century ago, features rotating exhibitions and permanent collections that are free to the public throughout the year. At Shriver Hall, students and locals pack into auditorium seats for concerts by musicians from all over the world. Sports fans enjoy cheering on the Blue Jays lacrosse team at Homewood Field. When wanting to get off campus, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is a short 3-mile drive south, and Oriole Park at Camden Yards is just 2 miles further.Commuting in Crabtown
Tuscany-Canterbury sits at the conflux of Charles Street and University Parkway, which connect the neighborhood to two of Baltimore’s major thoroughfares. Charles Street runs 2 miles south to North Avenue and Penn Station, where locals can catch the Northeast Regional Amtrak line and be at Baltimore Washington International Airport in just under an hour. Driving west 1.5 miles on University Parkway will bring residents to Interstate 83, which provides easy access to the Inner Harbor and Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The shops and food of Charles Village
Residents do not have to travel far from home to shop for groceries, as the neighborhood is favorably located near the Safeway in Charles Village. The streets of Charles Village and its neighbor, Better Waverly, are home to many long-standing restaurants and uniquely Baltimore businesses that are frequented by locals, students and visitors alike. “There are some restaurants in Tuscany-Canterbury,” O’Neill says. “But for more extensive shopping or a more raucous night out, folks definitely go down to Charles Village.” Book Thing of Baltimore is a volunteer-run used bookstore that opens once a month to distribute free reading material to the surrounding community. Normal’s Books and Records has been a community staple since 1990, offering an extensive selection of CDs, vinyl and books and hosting student performances in their back room. On St. Paul Street, the Charles Village Pub has maintained a loyal customer base for over 35 years with its homey pub food menu and its rotating beer list. For closer-to-home options, folks book tables at Cypriana, a chef-run Mediterranean restaurant hidden among the apartment buildings.
