Riverside County’s Sun Lakes Country Club makes retiring in style look easy. Swimming laps in one of its pristine pools or enjoying the expansive view of the San Gorgonio and San Jacinto Mountains is a part of everyday life here. After passing through the secured entrance, meticulously clean streets and sidewalks guide you through a community built with its residents in mind. “Sun Lakes was built to be the Disneyland for adults,” says Bonnie Seaver, an agent at Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate Oak Valley who has been a resident and selling homes within the community since its inception in 1985. “It has everything an active, older adult could ever dream of or need.”
The retirement community’s 3,327 homes and facilities display a Mediterranean flare and are priced between $330,000 to $700,000. At the lower end, you’ll find two bedrooms under 2,000 square feet and anything over 2,000 square feet with three bedrooms or more will likely go for $500,000 to $700,000. Most homes offer multiple single-story floorplans with spacious walk-in closets, dens, deeply shaded porches, and two-to-three-car garages. Landscaping, TV services, and other maintenance needs are all taken care of by the HOA. You won’t have to worry about an RV, boat or extra car fitting in your driveway, as a spacious lot is available for the community’s bigger vehicles.
While Banning lacks restaurants and entertainment, the Sun Lakes Country Club and surrounding cities make up for it. Residents have the choice of over 80 clubs and interest groups that cater to arts and crafts, card games and billiards, music, theater and fitness. “There’s nothing you can’t do in Sun Lakes,” Seaver says. “Our staff keeps our beautiful library stocked. There’s a lit fireplace and cozy leather couches to read on or to enjoy the quiet.” Swap the books for golf clubs, and you can hit the two 18-hole championship and executive golf courses or head to the park in Banning, just off West George Street. “Repplier Park has a beautiful stage in the summer, and they put on shows every weekend night. One time there was an ABBA cover band. That was just fabulous.”
About 30 miles south of Banning, Idyllwild offers an artsy downtown area with restaurants, boutiques and towering, decorative totem poles. Visit gorgeous Palm Springs 28 miles east for the best shopping centers and malls, or if you prefer a day by the lake, The Village offers restaurants, bars, and shopping right by Big Bear Lake, a little over 56 miles north, off CA-18.
“There’s also Oak Glen, which grows apples in the fall about 20 minutes from Sun Lakes, you can go up there for wonderful places to eat, and there’s a petting zoo for the kids,” Seaver says. “You’re also able to take a short drive to Cherry Valley and pick your own cherries off the trees, or just go for the Cherry Festival.” Gambling at Morongo Casino is another pastime for residents here as it's only 9 miles away via I-10.
Across Sun Lakes Boulevard at Sun Lakes Village Shopping Center is an Albertsons supermarket, along with multiple healthcare facilities and specialists, including Memorial Hospital. For prescriptions, Walgreens is just over a mile from home. “Sun Lakes is one of the most fun places to live. It’s just a great place and convenient to everything,” Seaver says. “The people here are just so wonderful, and we would love to meet more golfers.”
