Yermo is as rural as it gets but as more than meets the eye

Yermo is a tiny community off Interstate 15 that's as rural as it gets. "There are three families here that have the same last name, and that makes up a third of our population," says Cody Frazier, pastor of the local Silver Valley Baptist Church. "Get to know them, and you get to know everyone." There are only a few commercial stops here, including the largest gas station in California — a pit stop for travelers to Vegas. But while a blink could capture the entire place, a double take reveals more than one might imagine, including an annual bluegrass festival, an international sculpture garden and the original Del Taco. Yermo is also south of an abandoned mining town turned historic ghost town.

There’s one park and a rattlesnake habitat in the neighborhood

One of Yermo's quirky features is its rattlesnake habitat. "Someone who lived out there made it a wildlife preserve," Frazier says. "But you can see rattlesnake anywhere." Smith Park is the only recreational park in the neighborhood. It's a small, compact area with a playground next to the community center. Silver Valley Church spearheads outreach programs at the center. "We host youth programs, basketball tournaments and feed people," Frazier says. "We try to do something once or twice a month." For more parks, including a skate park and a dog park, locals head west for around 13 miles.

The median lot size is over 7,800 square feet, and the median build year is 1956.

Weekend getaways and touring sculptures in the desert

A major attraction of the area is Liberty Sculpture Park. Built within 26 acres of Yermo’s desert, it features life-size anti-communist sculptures and honors the universal desire for freedom. “Tons of people come into Yermo every week to see them. Almost every time I drive by, someone pulls in,” Frazier says. Calico Ghost Town Regional Park is less than 5 miles north of Yermo and maintains the original five buildings of the old 19th-century mining town. Locals can rent a cabin or bunkhouse or camp in the desert or for hiking and off-roading fun. They can also head there for Bluegrass in the Spring, typically held in May. The event conjures the wild west through pig racing shows, theatrical gun-slinging duals and blacksmith demos.

Some local spots to shop and dine, but more downtown

The original Del Taco still stands in Yermo, serving fast Mexican food. In Peggy Sue's 50's Diner, established over a decade earlier, waitresses model Betty Boop's look and walk across checkerboard floors to deliver malt milkshakes and deli sandwiches to booths. Eddies World quickly became another local icon after opening in 2018. The 26,000-square-foot gas station has rows of stuffed animals and candy, a main restaurant serving Americana classics and Peet's Coffee. Thrift & More is a humble antique store in Yermo. Chains, like Walmart Supercenter, are within 13 miles.
