There’s one park and a rattlesnake habitat in the neighborhood
One of Yermo's quirky features is its rattlesnake habitat. "Someone who lived out there made it a wildlife preserve," Frazier says. "But you can see rattlesnake anywhere." Smith Park is the only recreational park in the neighborhood. It's a small, compact area with a playground next to the community center. Silver Valley Church spearheads outreach programs at the center. "We host youth programs, basketball tournaments and feed people," Frazier says. "We try to do something once or twice a month." For more parks, including a skate park and a dog park, locals head west for around 13 miles.Modest homes at equally modest price points
Minimal traditional cottages and ranch styles are typical here. The land is flat, with wide dusty roads, and the rolling Calico Mountains rolling bluffs are in the distance. Yards are mostly desert, bordered by iron fences and dotted by hardy bushes. Prices range from the mid $80,000s to the mid $200,000s, depending on size and condition. The median lot size is over 7,800 square feet, and the median build year is 1956.Grade schoolers head to the Silver Valley Unified School District

A major attraction of the area is Liberty Sculpture Park. Built within 26 acres of Yermo’s desert, it features life-size anti-communist sculptures and honors the universal desire for freedom. “Tons of people come into Yermo every week to see them. Almost every time I drive by, someone pulls in,” Frazier says. Calico Ghost Town Regional Park is less than 5 miles north of Yermo and maintains the original five buildings of the old 19th-century mining town. Locals can rent a cabin or bunkhouse or camp in the desert or for hiking and off-roading fun. They can also head there for Bluegrass in the Spring, typically held in May. The event conjures the wild west through pig racing shows, theatrical gun-slinging duals and blacksmith demos. Some local spots to shop and dine, but more downtown
The original Del Taco still stands in Yermo, serving fast Mexican food. In Peggy Sue's 50's Diner, established over a decade earlier, waitresses model Betty Boop's look and walk across checkerboard floors to deliver malt milkshakes and deli sandwiches to booths. Eddies World quickly became another local icon after opening in 2018. The 26,000-square-foot gas station has rows of stuffed animals and candy, a main restaurant serving Americana classics and Peet's Coffee. Thrift & More is a humble antique store in Yermo.
