Murillo
Neighborhood in Bay Area, California

Desirable two-story homes start at $1.4 million
Murillo was developed in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but homes here are still frequently updated with modern amenities. As opposed to the ranch-style homes that dominate most of San Jose, the typical single-family home in this neighborhood has two stories. Spanish Revivals and Mediterranean-style designs are the most common housing styles, and although many properties share similar features, no two are exactly the same. Street parking is available, but residences also feature paved driveways and attached garages or carports. Well-maintained sidewalks, personalized front lawns and lush palm trees line the roads. Most properties sell between $1.4 million and $3 million in this area; the homes that sell on the higher end of that range tend to have higher square footage and more updates.Outdoor recreation in the Diablo Range foothills
Murillo Lake Park centers around a long, narrow body of water surrounded by a popular paved walking trail that many residents use for outdoor exercise and walking dogs. Across the street is Casabella Park, which features another small network of paved trails that weave through open green space where people can relax or have picnics. The Diablo Range, located directly east of Murillo, covers well over 5,000 acres of natural land with dozens of hiking trails that travel up to the tops of the foothills, where parkgoers can find campgrounds, scenic outlooks and wildlife observation areas. Michelle Elliott, a local Realtor with Coldwell Banker, says that many people often head to Alum Rock Park, which is 8 miles north of Murillo, for access to the hiking trails, campsites and additional recreation in the Diablo Range.High-rated schools within walking distance
Murillo is zoned for the Evergreen Elementary School District and the East Side Union High School District, which receive overall B and A Niche ratings, respectively. Kindergarten through sixth grade students can walk to the A-minus-rated Carolyn A. Clark Elementary, which sits directly in the middle of the neighborhood. Only a few blocks away is Quimby Oak Middle, another A-minus-rated school that serves Grades 7 and 8. The A-rated Evergreen Valley High School campus lines the neighborhood’s western border and offers many opportunities for secondary students. The high school’s orchestra is nationally recognized and has had the chance to perform at Carnegie Hall all the way in New York City. The school’s speech and debate teams have also been widely recognized at both the state and national level. Additionally, Evergreen Valley students can enroll in elective classes in everything from STEM to the performing arts.10 miles to downtown San Jose
There are no major highways running close to Murillo, which allows for a quieter atmosphere. Commuters can take Aborn Road and drive 3 miles east to merge onto Route 101, a main thoroughfare that travels north to connect with Interstate 280, the beltway highway surrounding the downtown San Jose area. San Jose Mineta International Airport is 12 miles away and situated just north of downtown. The nearest hospital is the Regional Medical Center of San Jose, which is a 6-mile drive from the neighborhood and offers 24-hour emergency services. Valley Transportation Authority operates public transit options throughout San Jose; the nearest light rail station, the Alum Rock station, is 5 miles from Murillo. Plans for future transit options have already been slated for this area: “BART is the equivalent of the metro over on the East Bay; currently, the system stops in Berryessa, but there are current plans to establish an extension further south into the eastern San Jose area,” Elliott says.Restaurants in Evergreen Village Square
Adjacent to Murillo across Aborn Road is the Evergreen Village Square, a shopping mall that’s actually planned in the shape of a circle, despite its name. This shopping center is home to a Walmart Neighborhood Market, where residents can buy groceries and other essentials. In the early hours, residents can stop by Evergreen Coffee Company for their morning caffeine boost. Right next door is Village Grill, a popular breakfast and lunch spot with signature cocktails and a menu of classic American favorites like burgers, chicken tenders and sandwiches. The Village Square Branch Library is also located in this shopping center and offers a variety of educational programming for the community. Less than a mile from Murillo is the Bella Montagna Winery, where patrons can participate in wine tastings on a hillside patio that overlooks the city.
