Rich history in Hampshire County
A former carriage trade town home to one of the largest land masses in Massachusetts, Belchertown has been quietly growing from a 3,500-person town in the 1980s to now a residence of over 15,000 people. Despite that growth, it “still has the attitude of a rural community,” says Randi Shenkman, who’s lived in the town for over 50 years and now serves as Vice President of the Belchertown Historical Association. The town’s top attraction is the Quabbin Reservoir, one of the largest unfiltered water supplies in the U.S. that serves as the water source for the entire Boston area. It has an unfortunate history, as four towns were carved out in the 1930s to create it, but that history has shaped Belchertown. “Lots of families here today have roots in one of those four towns,” Shenkman explains. “That’s what it’s like in Belchertown. Everybody knows everybody. I used to teach here, and now I get to know the children and grandchildren of my former students. I can’t go to the grocery store without seeing someone I know.”
Colonial architecture on large, wooded lots
American traditional, Colonial and Cape Cod architecture are predominant in Belchertown, and most listings are single-family homes. Some belong to gated communities, but many are in non-HOA areas. Since the region’s sparse, it’s common for homes to sit on several acres of wooded land. “A lot of homes in Belchertown have horses that people breed and train to ride,” Shenkman says. “And many have gardens, though no one makes a living farming anymore.” The median price is about $410,000. Prices start around $300,000 and get as high as $600,000, but most settle around $400,000 to $500,000. In Belchertown, higher prices add square footage, acreage and sometimes additional amenities like pools.

Hiking, swimming and a mini Fenway
At the Quabbin Reservoir, recreational activities are limited to protect the water quality, but it does have trails with scenic lookouts, boating authorized for fishing and educational programs like guided hikes. “It’s a great place for spotting wildlife, like deer and bald eagles,” Shenkman says. On the south side of Belchertown, the Herman Covey Wildlife Management Area on the Swift River is also good for hiking, fishing, boating and birdwatching, and on the north side, the 11-mile Norwottuck Rail Trail is a paved path fit for walking, biking and skating. Closer to the center of Belchertown, there are smaller town parks, like Parsons Field, Foley Field and the Belchertown Municipal Skatepark. Hulmes-Warner Mini Fenway is a replica of Fenway Park that operates as a Little League field, complete with details like its own Green Monster and Pesky’s Pole. On Arcadia Lake, Belchertown Town Beach is a popular place to go swimming in the summer, and it has lifeguards on duty and pedal boats available for rental. Two of Western Massachusetts’ best 18-hole golf courses are in Belchertown at Mill Valley Golf Links and Cold Spring Country Club. Both are open to the public with membership options available.

New England taverns and old-school diners
Locals in Belchertown love their few but mighty family-owned restaurants, like the New England tavern McCarthy’s Pub, the old-school diner Roadhouse Café and The Grapevine Grille, a full-service American restaurant. Massachusetts chain Antonio’s Pizza is another popular spot, serving pizza by the slice in a casual, family-friendly environment. For a meal on-the-go, there are a few fast-food chains in town, like McDonald’s and Dunkin’, and locals shop for groceries at Stop & Shop. There are a few shops in town, like Family Dollar, Ace Hardware and Tractor Supply Co., but for most other shopping, residents head 10 miles north to Amherst, which also has cultural opportunities offered by the Five College Consortium.

Celebrate year-round in Belchertown
“We have a huge common in the center of town, which hosts events and activities year-round,” says Shenkman. “But the biggest is the Belchertown Fair in September. People who moved away years ago will come back every year for the fair. It really brings the community together.” In the winter, the town gathers for the Belchertown Tree Lighting Ceremony at the town common fallowed by Winterfest in January or February, where residents ice skate on the town’s pond, compete in a snow sculpture contest and go on horse-drawn sleigh rides. In the spring, there’s a free outdoor concert series at local parks and in late May, the Belchertown Farmers Market kicks off its season and is held weekly, with fresh produce and artisanal products from local farmers and artisans. The summer is celebrated with amusement rides and games at the Belchertown Fair, and with free movie nights at parks in town. In mid-October, the town has its Belchertown Fall Foliage Festival, a day of family-friendly activities designed to celebrate the beauty of the town’s fall foliage, and the farmers market has its Harvest Festival, which celebrates the end of the market’s season with hayrides and pumpkin decorating.

U.S. 202 intersects major highways
Belchertown sits where several major highways meet — most notably, U.S. Route 202, which intersects Massachusetts Route 9 and splits off into Massachusetts Route 181 and Massachusetts Route 21. Combined, these roads allow residents easy access to nearby cities like Springfield, Amherst and Worcester. The Pioneer Valley Transit Authority also has a bus route that connects Belchertown to Amherst. “Most people in Belchertown will go to Amherst for things to do like shopping and going to the movies,” says Shenkman. “But Boston isn’t far either. It’s about an hour and a half.” The closest hospital to Belchertown is the Holyoke Medical Center, about 14 miles west, and the nearest airport is the Westover Airport, about 15 miles west.
