A farm-forward community in the Central Valley
Biggs is a cozy town buried in the expanse of California’s Central Valley. It is very rural, defined by the farmland that surrounds its quaint suburban heart. Residents work hard to ensure that it is a supportive and warm place. “We are a very small farming community, so employment in the area is usually connecting in one way or another to that industry,” says Realtor Denise Hicks with LPT Realty, an area resident of almost 20 years. “We have a little gas station, a grocery store, a post office and a strong school system that shows a lot of support for sports. It’s a lovely, sleepy place that’s very welcoming and very protective in an almost familial sense.”

A central town with historic and Modern Traditional homes surrounded by farmland
In Biggs, turn-of-the-century homes and modern suburbs tend to sit side by side. “There’s a handful of early 1900s historic homes left, and the rest are your standard suburban subdivision homes,” Hicks says. “Besides the main drag, there are a lot of farmers who have ranch setups. Outside my window, I’ve got alfalfa and walnuts, and you’ll also see a whole lot of rice.” New construction duplexes typically cost around $485,000. Single-family cottages, ranch-style homes and Modern Traditional builds can cost anywhere from $185,000 to $450,000, depending on lot size, build year and number of bedrooms. Many homes have custom features added during construction. “During the growth of the newer subdivisions, families could come in and put time into building their own houses,” Hicks adds. “That created a lot of sweat equity, and people really appreciated that.”

Supporting high school sports is important in Biggs
The Biggs Unified School District consists of 3 total institutions and earns an overall C-plus from Niche. Children may begin at Richvale Elementary, which receives a B-minus. Students can attend Richvale from kindergarten through grade 6. Biggs Elementary, which serves kindergarten through grade 8, earns a C-minus. Biggs High, located on 2nd Street, is rated C-plus. School sports matches are very important to the community. “Friday night, or any game day, the town shuts down and you will see everyone – adults and students – wearing Wolverine green,” Hicks says. “Whether it's softball, football or baseball, we have strong booster programs and we have a real dedication to our kids.”

Pizza Round-up and Big Momma's Number 1 BBQ are the only restaurants in town
The two closest supermarkets to Biggs are Safeway and Sav-Mor Foods in Gridley. However, a locally owned grocery store is available right in town. “Biggs Market, which started as Green’s Market, used to be the place to go to get what you needed,” Hicks explains. “It’s still there today, just a little smaller than what it used to be since those larger stores got put in.” The nearest big-box retailer is the Walmart Supercenter in Oroville. Big Momma’s Number 1 BBQ and Pizza Round-up are the only two restaurants within the town. “Back when my son was in high school, he was one of the first of the local teenagers to go and work for Pizza Round-up. They really engaged with the community and quickly became a staple,” Hicks says.

Halloween and Christmas events draw hundreds of visitors
Two major holiday celebrations illustrate the character of the town. “Our two biggest events each year are the Halloween Trunk or Treat and the Christmas tree lighting ceremony,” Hicks explains. “During Halloween, downtown is totally blocked off, community members decorate everything and we have 600 children come through in a matter of hours, lots from out of town who are just there to trick-or-treat. At the tree lighting ceremony, we have an ugly sweater contest, between 30 and 40 vendors and a Santa setup for pictures.”
Small parks offer picnic space for residents
Small green spaces like Biggs Family Park and L Street Neighborhood Park are scattered throughout Biggs, offering playgrounds and picnic shelters for residential use. Rio Bonito Park on the east side of town features several baseball diamonds and enjoys access to the athletic fields at Biggs High School.

Golden State Highway is the major area connector
California Route 99, also known as Golden State Highway, is the closest major thoroughfare, connecting Biggs south to Gridley, Yuba City and Sacramento. Because the town is so small, it is walkable and bikeable. The Butte Regional Transit (B-Line) bus makes stops in Biggs, making the trip north to Chico in just under an hour.
