Only a mile from the northeast border of Washington, D.C., is Bladensburg, a Prince George’s County town with thousands of people scattered across a single square mile. Within that compact area, residents can select from various longstanding homes and drink in views of the Anacostia River from a large waterfront park.

Bladensburg was originally called Garrison’s Landing when it was first settled in the mid-18th century. It’s since been renamed after former Maryland Governor Thomas Bladen and become home to roughly 10,000 residents. Most live in modest detached homes from the early to mid-20th century, including many Cape Cods with pairs of dormers, ramblers, brick bungalows and Tudor-style houses. On average, these are valued in the high $200,000s — over $100,000 less than the average Prince George’s County home. You can also find a few condominium developments in the town, including Bladenwoods, where one-bedroom units from the mid-1960s start in the low $100,000s. Occasionally, price tags in Bladensburg reach around $500,000, which might get you a six-bedroom, 1,600-square-foot Cape Cod with an attached garage.

About a half-dozen Prince George’s County Public Schools serve students in Bladensburg, most of which operate in the town itself. All three elementary schools in the town — Bladensburg, Rogers Heights and Port Towns Elementary — accommodate grades pre-K through six. For seventh and eighth grade, students join nearly 1,300 enrollees at William Wirt Middle School, a few minutes north of town. Most of the town’s ninth through 12th graders attend Bladensburg High School, which opened its doors over 85 years ago. Its 1,900-plus students can enroll in programs training them for various career paths, including nursing, architecture, cosmetology and carpentry. Meanwhile, around 300 students attend International High School at Langley Park, which offers a personalized curriculum for English-learning students. Bladensburg is also home to Elizabeth Seton High School, a private, Catholic, all-girls school boasting a 100% graduation rate and an A-minus grade from Niche.

Residents can make the most of Bladensburg’s Anacostia River-adjacent location at Bladensburg Waterfront Park. Whether you enjoy simply watching and listening to the rushing water or want to see where the current takes you, this is your go-to leisure spot. “I grew up going to this park,” says Robert Walker, who’s since become the park’s director. “It’s a very popular, family-friendly park with a lot of activities for kids, but also for grownups and seniors. It takes you from the urban sprawl of the area into a serene, beautiful escape with wildlife and wetlands.” Park activities include 45-minute interpretive boat tours along the river, costing $3 a person. You can also rent a canoe, kayak or rowboat, cast a line from the fishing pier or stroll along the riverside trail.

Some well-known eateries operate in Bladensburg, including Three Brothers Italian Restaurant. This DMV chain has expanded to about 10 locations over 30-plus years; regulars especially enjoy the chicken wings. A few minutes south, Pho Tai offers classic Vietnamese fare in an easygoing setting. A broader panoply of trendy eateries and watering holes lie just across the D.C. line, about five minutes from town. And if you prefer creating culinary concoctions at home, stock up on groceries at Save A Lot in the southern part of town.
