National amenities north of Minneapolis

Intersected by Highway 65, the city of Blaine combines all the convenience of a metropolitan area with A-rated schools and nationally recognized facilities just 13 miles north of Minneapolis. “The city has all the infrastructure you could want in a suburban community, with beautifully planned neighborhoods and a championship golf course,” says Sue Juneau, Broker at Keller Williams Classic Realty. Incorporated as a city in 1954, Blaine was first occupied by the Dakota people. Its soil was fertile, and the city developed as an agriculture hub with abundant dairy farms. The completion of U.S. Interstate 35W and U.S. Highway 65 led to rapid expansion in the late 20th century. Today, the city is home to 70,000 residents and more than 200 industrial businesses. Top employers like the Aveda Corporation, known for its vegan hair and salon products, contribute to this city's economy. Notable attractions, like the National Sports Center — the largest amateur sports facility in the world — and TPC of the Twin Cities — a private golf club, draw visitors from around the globe. With a quiet residential lifestyle and acclaimed amenities nearby, Blaine earns its place as the largest city in Anoka County.

New builds, golf communities and lakefront views

The real estate market in Blaine is attractive for its affordable prices and wide variety of housing options. “We have older, smaller housing that remains very affordable compared to new construction," says Juneau, who has over a decade of experience selling in the area. “There’s also housing that runs from $200,000 to $300,000 and even some properties that go for upwards of $1 million.” With a median sales price of $420,000, most homes here cost $20,000 less than the average property in the Minneapolis metro area. For example, prices range from as low as $130,000 for a two-bedroom condo to upwards of $1.2 million for a five-bedroom new Traditional with waterfront views of Sunrise Lake. Homes settled along the area’s man-made lakes are often the most expensive. Subdivisions like Deacon’s Walk — home to the TPC Twin Cities private golf club — are also priced at higher costs. Established single-family homes dominate the area, with ranch styles and new traditional designs. Multi-family condos and townhouses are also available. “Many townhouses tend to be demographically appealing to empty nesters,” adds Juneau. Older streets are lined with compact lots shaded by mature trees, while newer development is moving into the northeast corner on wider residential plats.

Spanning over 500 acres, the Blaine Wetland Sanctuary is a designated natural preserve within the city. Visitors can stroll the sanctuary's wooden boardwalk overlooking the marshlands or explore over 1.7 miles of trails that pass through four active wildlife habitats. Lakeside Commons Park features a mulched playground, splash pad and sand beach overlooking Sunrise Lake. During the warmer months, it’s a popular spot for swimming, fishing and kayaking. Aquatore Park is another option, with a dog park, paved walking paths, a shaded picnic pavilion and a playground with swings. The Fogerty Ice Arena is also located here, hosting practice and championship games for ice hockey, soccer and curling throughout the year. Sports enthusiasts can visit the National Sports Center, which offers over 100 programs and hosts both national and international events throughout the year. With its 600-acre multi-sports campus, the center attracts more than 4 million visitors annually.

The private TPC Twin Cities golf club is another major draw for Blaine. Situated within the Deacon’s Walk housing development and designed by the legendary Arnold Palmer, the 18-hole golf course features 235 acres of stunning countryside and is also home to the annual PGA 3M Open. “It’s a big deal — we have all the stars walking around right within eyeshot,” Juneau says. The Clubhouse also features casual and fine dining areas and banquet rooms for social events.
