Boardman is a blend of nature and retail

Boardman features a lengthy catalog of restaurants and retail options that balance the commercial interests of the present day among hundreds of acres in local parks that pay homage to the town’s rural roots. Area parks remind the community of northeast Ohio’s underrated landscape, artistically carved with creeks and dense woods. “You have a tremendous number of things to do in Boardman. There’s everything you can want,” says Realtor Carmen Neapolitan of Neapolitan Realty. Neapolitan has sold homes across the area for over a decade.

Housing options abound in Boardman

Boardman’s residential streets network around shopping strips and parks, offering various housing options. Single-story ranch-style homes stretch under low-sloping roofs, neighbored by Craftsman builds with tapered porch pillars. Other designs include Prairie-style homes with side-gabled roofs and small storybook cottages. South Boardman hosts the area’s largest estates, over 2,000 square feet, in suburban-style subdivisions patterned with manicured lawns and decorative brick or stucco exteriors. “You have some high, elite areas and some medium-priced areas,” Neapolitan says. Housing prices range from $100,000 to $350,000.

Mill Creek Park stuns alongside ample community respites

Stretching along the Boardman’s west border is Mill Creek Park, covering over 5,000 acres of natural landscape in southwest Youngstown. “I just had a bunch of friends move here from California, and they were just amazed at Mill Creek Park, literally amazed with how beautiful it is,” says Neapolitan. Boardman hugs the southern portion of the park, granting access to the miles and miles of hiking trails heading north and south. Locals journey through the Hitchcock Woods or photograph the views at Lake Newport along Boardman. The 294 acres of Boardman Park include a disc golf course, a dog park, and 4 miles of hiking trails. Boardman Park hosts ample public events, such as Music in the Park or youth-friendly events like Mom and Me for Tea or the annual Easter egg hunt. About 2 miles north, Forest Lawn Memorial Park is more of an observational experience, complemented by statues and mature trees.

Shopping and dining options line Boardman-Canfield Road

The Shops at Boardman Park feature stores like Target and Best Buy and a list of chain restaurants, including Texas Roadhouse and Olive Garden. Down the road from the outdoor shopping plaza is Southern Park Mall, featuring popular retailers like American Eagle and Macy’s. Restaurant options abound in Boardman. “Boardman has some of the finest pizza around town, and I’ll tell you, Uptown Pizza is the best,” says Neapolitan. After pizza, locals enjoy a hot fudge sundae from Handel’s, the town’s treasured ice cream parlor. “Their ice cream is all homemade, and it’s so delicious. When people stop in Boardman, they go to Handles,” says Neapolitan. Two Giant Eagle supermarkets cater to grocery needs along central Boardman Poland Road.
