Bogue is a quiet community along the Bogue Sound home to a U.S. Marine Landing Field
Bogue is a relatively unhurried community situated between dense forests and vibrant saltwater, anchored by a U.S. Marine Corps Auxiliary Landing Field. While the landing field makes up about half of the community, plenty of houses surround it, with residents who don't mind the occasional noise. Bogue's location near the water encourages an outdoorsy lifestyle, with many nearby fishing charters and beaches. "It's a pretty small town that borders the Bogue Sound," says local broker Tyler Marcell, owner of Advantage Coastal Properties. He's sold homes across the community for 25 years and lives in Carteret County. "The sound is this beautiful intercoastal waterway that connects to the Atlantic. You could call it a fishing hot spot." The town doesn't have much commercial development, so its residents enjoy the quiet, but also appreciate the proximity to busier, nearby towns.
A variety of ranch-style and waterfront homes
Bogue features a small selection of early 20th-century bungalows, but most of the housing was built between the 1950s and the 21st century, resulting in an eclectic assortment of architectural offerings. "Styles are wildly diverse," Marcell says. "There are some smaller communities within Bogue where you get maybe five specific housing styles, but it's not as common as people doing their own thing." Residents often custom-build their homes, but ranch styles, contemporary colonials and new traditional houses are popular community-wide. A few homes overlook a pocket of the Bogue Sound along Hunting Bay Drive, featuring private docks and spacious backyards. Homes more inland typically sell from around $250,000 to $520,000, but homes along the water sell at higher prices. A nearly 1,600-square-foot waterfront home recently sold for around $850,000.

Locals in Bogue and across Carteret County enjoy access to the water. "Everything is about how to get to and see the water," Marcell says. "Sailboats are here all the time, and if you're someone who likes to go shelling or crabbing, you're so close to the ocean." Bogue is near several fishing charters, including Sandbar Safari Charters. The local company offers fishing trips and eco-tours of the Bogue Banks, offering the chance for customers to reel in anything from blue crabs and shrimp to mackerel and redfish. Navigating Carteret County
Bogue is a car-dependent area, as there is no mass transit in the area. Bogue's commercial activity is concentrated along U.S. Route 24, which cuts through the middle of town and connects residents to Morehead City and Jacksonville, both about 25 miles away. Trading Treasures Consignment Shop offers second-hand goods, and Guthrie Farm Market offers locally sourced goods out of an open-air stand just off the road. The farm market is known for its big bins of Bogue Sound watermelon, but also offers home-baked goods, as well as berries, onions and corn. The neighboring town of Cape Carteret features a couple of locally owned and chain fast-food restaurants. Mark's Family Restaurant, one of the nearest eateries to Bogue, offers a breakfast buffet on the weekends and seafood specials like a catfish basket and crab cake burgers throughout the week. Locals can grab essentials at Dollar General and additional groceries at Lowe's Foods, about 2 miles west.
