I-89 connects to Montpelier and Burlington, is risky in snowstorms
Interstate 89 runs through Bolton, connecting it to Montpelier, 19 miles east, and Burlington, 34 miles west. "One of Bolton's main claims to fame is that it's the worst place to go in a blizzard on the interstate," Gerbode says. "When you have to drive from Montpelier to Burlington on the interstate, Bolton's flat and the wind howls across it, so sometimes you have to quickly stop your car and hope nobody runs into you." Bolton's closest hospital is Central Vermont Medical Center, 22 miles east. When traveling out of town, residents can fly out of Burlington International Airport or take the Amtrak from Burlington's Union Station, whose daily Ethan Allen Express service stops in Rutland and Albany on its way to New York City.
