Rural homes, public events and a small-town feel
Tucked between Webster and the Merrimack River, Boscawen has hundreds of acres of surrounding forests and rural countryside, where new and mid-century homes sit beneath mature trees. Family-run farms and orchards, as well as locally owned hobby shops and restaurants, make up a good portion of Boscawen's quiet social scene, and it is common for residents to drive south to Penacook or Concord for more options. "I think one of the reasons people live here is the rural atmosphere. The original culture was very much agriculturally based, but even though the town has grown tremendously in the past 20 years, it maintains its small-town feel," says Bonny John, director of the Boscawen Public Library. "There is a strong sense of community, and although there is no 'center' or main shopping area right in town, everything you need is close by. We are minutes to I-93 and Concord. All in all, it's a great place to live." The Boscawen Public Library is one of the most popular places in town for both children and adult residents, offering programs like 'Gentle' yoga, book discussion groups, a writer's group and a weekly adult craft group. Outdoorsy locals enjoy access to garden stores and fruit picking, kayaking on the Merrimack River, hiking, and biking along the Northern Rail Trail.

Twiggs Art Gallery and outdoor trails by the Merrimack River
The Northern Rail Trail west of King Street stretches 58 miles from Penacook to Lebanon. Folks can hike, bike or run along the trail, encountering covered bridges, tunnels, creeks and towering trees. Across from the trail’s parking area is Jamie Welch Memorial Field, which overlooks the Merrimack River. Adele Sanborn started the Twiggs Gallery on King Street nine years ago to provide herself with a studio space for her calligraphy and mixed media, create an art gallery and host workshops and classes. “There are three workshop areas and we run classes in the spring and fall, which is a fun way of getting the community involved. Anyone can be creative, whether they're in the kitchen, in the garden or with a paintbrush, and we want to remind them how important creativity is in their lives,” Sanborn says. The gallery also has a small retail space called Spriggs. Twiggs Gallery hosts several monthly groups for things like altered books, embroidery, poetry and an artistic POD that gathers to discuss art and technique. She says, “It's good to have a full gambit. It’s nice to get together with fellow creatives, and it certainly can create new friendships. It's a lot of fun.” The Black Forest Nursery Garden Center offers reasonable prices on perennials, shrubs and fruit-bearing trees for those who enjoy gardening. Those who like to paddle the Merrimack River can launch kayaks or canoes at the Canterbury Canoe Launch on Intervale Road on the river’s east bank.

Boscawen’s Old Home Day festival and art
The area’s most popular event is Old Home Day, which was created in the 1800s by one of New Hampshire’s governors to bring back farming families who were migrating into cities to find more work. “Old Home Day reminds us how important our town is. Each town in the area chooses a day; Boscawen’s is the Saturday before Labor Day, and the town hosts a festival with a parade, fireworks and games for the kids," Sanborn says. For Old Home Week, the Twiggs Gallery supports the event by focusing on the area’s farming culture. “Each year we'll choose an animal – the first year was a sheep – and we cut them out of thin plywood so Boscawen residents and businesses can buy them, paint them and display them in their yards.” Then, judges go around and pick the best ones. “It's a great way for new people to tour the art in town and see different streets and houses they might never have seen. This year we chose pigs and call them our Swanky Swines," Sanborn says.
