Antique Victorians and multifamily units in St. Marks
While Walsh says most of the market consists of period homes, there’s an eclectic mix of options in St. Marks. Homebuyers can find classic Boston multifamily triple-deckers and single-family Victorians adorned with bright and bold colors. “Everyone can appreciate something that’s unique, like the stunningly beautiful Victorians,” Walsh says. Multifamily units in St. Marks often sell between $500,000 and $600,000. Two-bedroom, single-family layouts can start around $500,000, as well, though five-bedroom properties can surpass $1 million. Prices for multifamily homes start around $800,000. The urban nature of the neighborhood allows for plenty of sidewalks along the modest front yards, so residents can expect to see neighbors walking the streets.Getting outside and active in St. Marks
A few parks allow residents to connect with nature in their otherwise urban surroundings. Reverend Loesch Family Park, one of the neighborhood’s largest outdoor spaces, offers renovated benches, basketball courts, a playground and fields. Codman Square Park sits on the western end of the neighborhood and features a shaded seating area under towering mature trees. Just outside of St. Mark’s eastern boundary, visitors of Hemenway Park can play baseball, basketball or go down the hillside slide.Public education options near St. Marks
St. Marks children can receive education through Boston Public Schools. Dr. William W. Henderson Inclusion Elementary sits inside the neighborhood for kindergarten through Grade 1, which Niche gives an overall A-minus score. Students could then head to Dr. William W. Henderson Inclusion School’s Upper Campus, rated C-plus, which enrolls children from Grades 2 through 12. The average class size at Henderson is about 22, giving students the opportunity to have more one-on-one collaboration with teachers, and it is the only Boston public school that offers comprehensive learning for children of all abilities. Boston International High School is another option nearby and scores a B-minus.Open Streets and Macaroni KID Dorchester
St. Marks residents can head to Ashmont for concerts, community cleanups and Open Streets events. Open Streets is a Boston initiative that closes down car traffic, allowing pedestrians and bikers to roam free along the road for a day. Families can refer to the Macaroni KID Dorchester site, as well, to keep up with the latest summer camps and kid-friendly activities throughout the town.Transportation options in St. Marks
The Shawmut subway station at the corner of Dayton Street and Clementine Park remains a major drawing factor to St. Marks. The station sits on the Red Line and can take residents to Downtown Boston in 10 to 15 minutes, where the majority of residents work. “The Red Line is the most desirable train line to be on in the city,” Walsh says. Interstate 93 runs a couple miles east of St. Marks, and Boston Logan International Airport sits under 10 miles away via I-93.Dining on Dorchester Avenue and nearby shopping
A portion of the major artery and thoroughfare, Dorchester Avenue, runs through St. Marks. Dorchester Avenue is the locale’s foremost commercial street, lined with restaurants and other businesses. El Barrio serves up authentic Mexican fare, and Via Cannuccia offers Italian classics for breakfast, brunch and dinner. St. Marks residents often head north to the Fields Corner neighborhood and south to the Ashmont neighborhood for food, too, and both are located along Dorchester Avenue. Price Rite Marketplace, Target and Stop & Shop are just about 1 mile from most residences.
