A rural neighborhood adjacent to downtown Concord

Miles of forests and farmland encompass the sizeable residences throughout Bow. With a minimum lot requirement of 2 acres, the area yields a sense of seclusion without sacrificing proximity to the city. “It’s conveniently located right off 89, giving access to both Manchester and Concord,” says Real Estate Associate Susan Roemer with Better Homes & Gardens’ Masiello Group. Roemer has been selling in the area since 2002 and says, “Here, you’re within reach of all of New Hampshire’s seasonal activities. You could be up in the Lakes Region, at the beach or skiing within about an hour.” Complete with the No. 1 public school district in Merrimack County according to Niche, Bow attracts families searching for a quiet, community-centric neighborhood near the state’s capital.

Bow School District earns an A

Despite Bow’s rural landscape, residents are well connected. “Many people move here for the great school system, which gets families involved in the community,” Roemer says. Children can begin their education at Bow Elementary (BES), which scores a B-plus on Niche. With higher enrollment numbers and an increase in demand for classroom space, BES launched an ongoing $12.9 million expansion project in 2023. Middle school students can head to Bow Memorial and then Bow High, which both earn A-minus Niche grades. Bow High offers extracurriculars in performing arts, athletics and academics, including a jazz ensemble, Nordic skiing and the Bow Bots Robotics team.

A 2-acre lot minimum for Bow residences

Houses are hidden behind towering trees and situated off long driveways. The 2-acre property minimum allows homeowners to have plenty of space for additions, like pools, seating areas or expansive gardens. Quintessential New England colonials and Capes remain the most popular architectural type, while some New Traditional builds have popped up in the market over previous years. Home prices exceed Concord’s averages and most often fall between $550,000 and $700,000, though outliers can be found on either end of the range. Because the area is very forested, trees often serve as a barrier between properties and harvest a sense of privacy. Bow is void of sidewalks, so residents tend to get around by car, though biking is also common.

Hiking through forests and paddling on Turee Pond

The Nottingcook Forest and Hammond Nature Preserve account for just some of Bow’s miles of forested expanses for hiking and mountain biking. “There are trails everywhere,” Roemer says. “There are very popular ones near Turee Pond behind the high school.” Turee Pond is one of Bow’s most notable outdoor attractions and features a boat launch, adjacent to Bow High’s back parking lot. Paddlers often come to watch the sunset from their kayaks or explore the marshes, while anglers can catch chain pickerels and black crappies. Soccer fields, baseball diamonds and playgrounds are available at Richard Hanson Memorial Recreational Area, home to many youth sporting events. The Bow Parks & Recreation department offers athletic clubs for both children and adults, with options from snowmobiling to Zumba. For a picnic or a day at the playground, families can head to Sargent Park on the busier side of town, near Interstate 93.

Heading to Concord for shopping and dining

Other than Treat’s Maple Farm, which has sold natural syrup to the community since the 1990s, Bow has very few shops. Residents go to Concord for dining along Main Street at spots like Revival Kitchen & Bar or The Barley House Restaurant & Tavern. About 9 miles away, Loudon Road, known as “Food Valley,” has countless fast and casual options, from Chipotle to Olive Garden. Shopping centers also sit off Loudon, where locals can pick up essentials at Shaw’s, Walmart and Target. Hannaford and Market Basket are a couple miles closer to Bow in Fort Eddy Plaza off Interstate 93.

Annual Bow events and daily activities

While school sports drive much of Bow’s community involvement, other events also bring residents together throughout the year. The Rotary Club throws trademark Bow events, like a summer concert series at the town Bandstand/Gazebo, as well as antique car shows. Another major gathering is the annual Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving, which raises money for the police department. The Baker Free Library hosts youth activities, including reading groups, art classes and writing sessions. Adults can also participate in book clubs or take a yoga class at the library. Each month, visitors can enjoy a new art exhibit here that spotlights local creativity. Neighborhood activities extend to the 55-plus population, as the Bow Young At Heart Club organizes socials and potlucks at the Bow Old Town Hall.

Navigating Bow and Concord

With very few sidewalks and bike lanes, residents rely on cars for transportation. Interstates 93 and 89 flow nearby, providing quick access north into Concord. Bow’s central location allows for about 23-mile proximity to the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, which has nonstop flights into major cities, like Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students.
