Northwest Ohio, home of the Falcons

Most notable for its association with Bowling Green State University, this college town located 20 miles outside Toledo got its start when locals struck oil in the late 19th century. Named after its counterpart in Kentucky, Bowling Green, Ohio, flourishes with college spirit and rural culture. Rebecca O’Hare, office assistant at the Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce says, “BGSU is a huge draw for the city, but the true charm is found in Bowling Green’s community events, small-town feel and endless opportunities.” A prime spot for commuters, young professionals and Falcons fans, Bowling Green’s 30,000 residents refer to their community affectionately as BG. The community also stands out for its strong school district, college sporting events and attractions like the annual National Tractor Pulling Championship.

International cuisine and plenty of bars

West Wooster Street is lined with franchise and local dining options that are frequented by both locals and college students. “The downtown has had a big resurgence in the past 5 years,” says Realtor Matthew Watson, who sells homes in the city with RE/MAX Preferred Associates. “There’s great restaurants and a vibrant bar scene.” Kabob It maintains a laid-back collegiate vibe and serves Mediterranean cuisine. For craft beer, cheese-smothered bar food and games of beer pong on the patio, Ziggy’s is a popular spot. Big-box retailers line Main Street.

Neighborhood parks and a few remaining acres of the Black Swamp Preserve

The city maintains multiple parks where residents can play sports, take their kids to playgrounds and walk pets. For an afternoon on the fairways, there are several public golf courses. The Black Swamp Preserve is home to some of the last acres of the swamp that once covered most of the area before it was drained in the 1800s for farming.

Seasonal events, like the National Tractor Pulling Championship

Sporting events at Bowling Green State University are a significant source of entertainment for locals. The Falcons, as Bowling Green’s teams are known, compete in the NCAA Division I as a part of the Mid-American Conference. Up to 24,000 football fans pack into Doyt L. Perry Stadium whenever the Falcons play their main rival, the University of Toledo Rockets. Other popular sports include basketball, baseball and hockey.

The National Tractor Pulling Championship, an annual three-day televised affair, roars to life in the mid-August heat. “People travel from all over the world to witness the revelry of these competitions all weekend long,” O’Hare says. The event hosts a myriad of competitions to test the mechanical might of the tractors but also includes live music and plenty of local vendors. The Black Swamp Arts Festival features three days of concerts and fine art shows downtown. This event is free to the public and is run entirely by volunteers.
