History and a vibrant Downtown anchor Brea

Brea, which means tar in Spanish, gets its name from the black oil found here that pushed the early development of this metropolis at the turn of the 20th century. Located at the foothills of Puente Hills just north of Anaheim, the city showcases the area’s distinct art and history. Once an epicenter during the oil boom, the southwestern California enclave is now home to trendy restaurants and cafes, award-winning schools, and a thriving community. “Downtown Brea has a lot of energy,” says Realtor Sheila Buonauro of TNG Real Estate Consultants, who has lived in Brea since 1987. “Most people love Brea because of its family-oriented and open community, school system and convenient accessibility to the rest of California.”

Diverse dining and a central shopping mall

An eclectic mix of trendy restaurants and local boutiques interlace with cultural entertainment options in Brea’s vibrant downtown district along Brea Boulevard and Birch Street. Diverse dining options line the district, with standouts like Old Brea Chop House, an upscale steakhouse in the middle of downtown. Taste of Brea is a summer food festival that celebrates the city’s many eateries. “Randolph Boulevard closes down for vendors, music and all the restaurants,” Buonauro says. “It’s a celebration of food and community.” Apart from local establishments and boutiques downtown, residents can also fulfill their shopping needs at the Brea Mall, a centrally located shopping center with name brands like Macy’s and JCPenney.

Arts and history converge in Brea

Hearkening back to the area’s oil-field origins, the Olinda Oil Museum & Trail is part museum, part hiking trail where visitors can walk by vintage oil rig equipment and see working oil rigs. Additional regional history can be uncovered at the Brea Museum and Historical Society, located by City Hill Park. More than 170 artworks, including outdoor sculptures, are part of the area's comprehensive Art in Public Places program, which was started in 1975 and is currently viewable via self-guided tours.

Redwood groves and recreation along the Puente Hills

Brea boasts two county regional parks and 12 community parks. Home to the county’s only redwood grove, Carbon Canyon Regional Park sprawls across 124 acres on the eastern side of the city. Cyclists and hikers explore over 3 miles of trails that snake through towering redwood trees, while sports facilities and a colorful playground keep locals active. The park also features a 4-acre lake with fishing piers and hosts a variety of events, including night hikes and wildflower walks. Additional playgrounds and sporting fields are found at Brea Sports Park. Repurposed from a railroad and train depot, The Track is Brea Park’s 4-mile two-way bike trail that has a separated pedestrian walkway.
