Hot bed for NYC transplants
The Reservoir-Whiskey Hill neighborhood in Bridgeport, Connecticut, earned its name from illicit operations during Prohibition. Today, the suburban area is known for its parks, housing variety and proximity to Downtown Bridgeport. Realtor Carolyn Colon-Ortega, who has been selling homes in the area for five years with Century 21 Scala Group, says one perk of the community is that it is close to the highway. This has become particularly important since the Bridgeport region was hit with an influx of transplants from New York City in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Colon-Ortega says the new transplants are now part of a residential community with close access to shopping, highways, commuter trains and public transportation — making the neighborhood ideal for those who have relocated from New York City to commute.
No one home is like the other
Homebuyers will find updated Colonial-style homes and fenced-in bungalows with small front yards throughout Reservoir-Whiskey Hill. Colon-Ortega says there’s also a mix of spacious contemporary properties, multi-family homes and renovated Cape Cods with vinyl siding situated on quiet cul-de-sacs. “All the houses here are different,” she said. Prices for the homes start at $217,000 and can reach $530,000. The median home price in Reservoir-Whiskey Hill is $300,000 compared to the median cost of a property in Bridgeport, which is $600,794. Established in 1961, the neighborhood has nearly 3,000 dwellings. Antonio Salerno of RE/MAX Heritage says most homes were built between 1940 and 1960. The median age of residents is 37 years old and almost 30% of the homes are rented.
