Bridgeville is a peaceful farming town with a popular festival

Bridgeville is an agricultural southwestern Delaware town whose biggest appeal is that it’s “away from the craziness of the beach traffic,” says Jay Schulman, who’s sold homes in the area since 1989 and is a Realtor and team lead for The Delashore Team with Coldwell Banker Realty. But for one weekend each October, thousands descend on this rural area for the Apple Scrapple Festival, a community event that celebrates Bridgeville’s two biggest industries: apples and scrapple, a regional pork dish. The area is surrounded by farms, but Bridgeville also has a small town center and a growing 55-plus golf course community called Heritage Shores.

Homes on spacious rural lots and a 55-plus community

“If you’re buying a single-family home, you might be able to find one with a little more land, and it’s more affordable,” Schulman says. Bridgeville’s town center is laid out in a grid and has wide, sidewalk-lined streets. Here, Queen Anne houses, American Foursquares and Craftsman bungalows were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and some ranch-style homes from the 1950s are also available. Prices typically range from around $100,000 to $350,000. The Heritage Shores 55-plus community is in the south and has a more suburban feel, with curvy streets and Craftsman-inspired new traditional houses surrounding a golf course. Most homes here are one level, and new houses are still being built. Prices here range from around $300,000 to $550,000, plus monthly homeowners association fees of around $320. The ranch-style homes outside of town have a more rural feel and can sit on multi-acre farms. Established farms can cost between $700,000 and $1.3 million, while smaller properties can range from around $150,000 to $450,000.

The annual Apple Scrapple Festival

The Apple Scrapple Festival began over 30 years ago to celebrate two of Bridgeville’s oldest companies: T.S. Smith and Son’s Farm and RAPA Scrapple. The event has attracted thousands to the area for over 30 years to sample various scrapple and apple dishes, like the popular apple dumpling with ice cream. “They have all different types and flavors of scrapple,” Schulman says. “There's just a tremendous number of booths and an insane amount of people there.” Though the food court is the festival’s biggest draw, attendees can also compete in the kids’ apple toss, the ladies' skillet toss and an apple baking contest. Entertainment includes carnival rides, cooking demonstrations and the Mayor’s Scrapple Sling.

Several produce markets and a few locally owned restaurants

T.S. Smith and Son’s Farm operates the T.S. Smith Orchard Point Market, which serves deli sandwiches and sells locally sourced produce and groceries. Other produce stands include Donnie’s Market and Evans Farm Produce. In Bridgeville’s town center, Jeff’s Taproom & Grille has served classic pub fare for almost 50 years. Heritage Shores’ residents can eat upscale American dishes at Passwaters Restaurant in the community clubhouse. Fast food restaurants and a Food Lion are near Sussex Highway. National retailers like Walmart and Lowe’s Home Improvement are in Seaford.
