Garden City blends homes and businesses in Brooklyn Center
Garden City blends commercial and residential spaces near some of Brooklyn Center's most popular parks and shopping destinations. "I have neighbors that live in their home and run a chiropractor office out of their home," says April Graves, Mayor of Brooklyn Center, who lives in Garden City. "On the other side of me is a medical center and mosque." Both chain and local businesses are along Brooklyn Boulevard, which goes through the neighborhood. Centennial Park, the largest green space in the city, is less than 1 mile away. With Interstate 94 along the border, residents can easily access the Twin Cities.

Mid-20th-century homes with grassy lawns at affordable prices
Grassy lawns with spruce and maple trees line the wide roads and occasional sidewalks in Garden City. The neighborhood is filled with midcentury homes, mostly built in the 1950s and 1960s. Ranch styles are common, featuring hip and gable roofs that make it easy for rain and snow to fall off. There are also split-levels. "Brooklyn Center is very affordable," Graves says. "That's why I bought my house where I did." Prices for a two- or three-bedroom home range from $200,000 to $350,000.Garden City receives an annual snowfall of almost 60 inches. Road plows come through if the snow exceeds 2-and-a-half inches, and the city recommends that residents wait to shovel their driveways until after the area is plowed. Properties closest to Centennial Park are at risk of flooding, meaning flood insurance is required by most private and all federally backed mortgage lenders.
Rows of brightly colored split-level homes adds to the character of Garden City.

Shops and restaurants provide a variety of options to residents
Part of Garden City's appeal is the number of businesses in and around the neighborhood. "I live in an area that's very accessible to shopping, to transit, to a place to socialize and have drinks," Graves says. Restaurants ranging from Hip Sing BBQ, which delivers Chinese, to the American fare at American Legion are along Brooklyn Boulevard, one of the city's major thoroughfares. "It's our neighborhood 'Cheers,'" Graves says of American Legion. Dollar Tree and Sun Foods, an Asian grocery store, are also in the area. Brooklyn Boulevard leads to Shingle Creek Crossing, one of the main retail areas less than one mile away. The shopping center features big-box stores such as T.J. Maxx and grocery stores like Cub Foods. The Brooklyn Center Farmers Market sells fresh produce and handmade crafts every Thursday afternoon from July through September.
