Brownstone blocks and stylish storefronts
A neighborhood of historic brownstones, tree-lined streets and low-rise commercial corridors, Carroll Gardens offers an idyllic blend of a slower-paced lifestyle and urban amenities. Traditionally an Italian American enclave, the area is named for the small gardens that front many of the stately residences, and it is still home to longstanding Italian butchers, bakeries and restaurants. Once sleepy, the area now teems with stylish shops, trendy dining spots, artisanal cocktail bars and Pilates studios. Strong schools, more living space, and lively parks attract families to the area, and a significant French-expat community has settled here, thanks to several dual-language educational options and Gallic-influenced businesses. “It’s very neighborhood-y. The environment feels small-town,” says Carolyn Cedar, a broker who has worked in the area for nearly 20 years.
