Kensington
Bangladeshi favorites and old school pizza
A street sign at one of the neighborhood’s main intersections identifies the area as “Little Bangladesh,” and surrounding grocery stores and restaurants reflect that. Radhuni is known for seafood dishes and Sonia Café is a go-to spot for snacks like samosas and fuchka. Thai Farm Kitchen is New York Times-recommended, Korner Pizza has been serving a celebrated slice since 1966 and Hamilton’s is the go-to brunch spot. Carnival Fresh Market and Isaac Apple Farm stock fresh produce and international foods 24 hours a day. JW Real Polish Delicatessen sells pierogis and sausage, and Foodtown offers a big store shopping experience.Civic and religious celebrations
Kensington is known for its street fairs celebrating Bangladeshi businesses and culture. Vendors sell traditional clothes and food and music acts perform from a stage. Men kneel in prayer along the closed McDonald Avenue for Eid-al-Fitr and the holiday is celebrated in public squares.Diversity in styles, types and asking prices
Like its population, the housing stock of Kensington is quite diverse, including single-family vinyl clapboard homes, attached brick townhouses, barrel-front limestones and pre- and post-war co-ops and new developments. “The inventory is a lot more varied in Kensington, and at all different price points” says Carolyn Cedar, a Kensington resident and broker of 19 years. Townhouses, some of them multifamilies, list for about $1.5 to $3 million. Co-op buildings line the thoroughfare of Ocean Parkway, with homes listing for around $350,000 for a one-bedroom and up to $725,000 for a three-bedroom. Condominium prices start at $600,000 for a one-bedroom with three-bedrooms asking up to $1.3 million.Famous green spaces, plazas and playgrounds
Two of the borough’s largest green spaces lie just north of the neighborhood. Locals enjoy Prospect Park’s playgrounds, tennis center, and running and biking trails. Kensington Dog Run accommodates both large and small dogs. The historic, landmarked Green-wood Cemetery measures nearly 500-acres and is known for its natural beauty, famous permanent residents and educational and cultural programming. Gathering spots in the area include Avenue C Plaza and a colorfully painted new closed street with seating. Popular spots for families include Greenwood Playground and Dome Playground.A home to chess champions and AP classes
Schools in Kensington include PS 130, which enrolls students prekindergarten through fifth grade and is home to a champion chess team. Niche gives it an A minus rating. Receiving the same Niche grade, the diverse Ditmas Junior High School offers a rich arts program. Nearby Midwood High School at Brooklyn College offers AP classes and is A-rated.A local train line gets an assist from busses
The F and G lines run along the western border of Kensington; travel to Midtown is about an hour. The B and Q express trains serve the nearby neighborhoods of Prospect Park South and Flatbush to the east.
