Bruce Township has a rural feel but plenty of drive

Located north of Detroit, Bruce Township was established as an agricultural center in the 1830s and has maintained its rural charm. Homes typically have larger front lawn and backyards, with longer driveways. Some homes have in-ground pools, while others back onto local lakes with private fishing docks. The township is also home to Ford’s Michigan Proving Grounds, serving as a local employer. “If you’re looking for a place… with space around you, apple orchards nearby with easy transportation, Bruce Township is the place you’d want to look,” says Thomas Zibkowski, a Realtor with Real Estate One.

A mix of housing styles with low HOA activity

The median home price is $579,000, higher than the state and national medians. Homes vary from manufactured and ranch styles to farmhouses, New Traditionals and estates. Zibkowski notes that the area has a low housing density but new builds are becoming more common. Zibkowski says the community has attracted a mix of families and maintains a working-class feel.

According to flood zone maps, there is a slight risk near local lakes and streams.

Ford’s proving grounds drive employees to live in Bruce Township

The Ford Michigan Proving Grounds, in the center of the community, is one of the largest vehicle testing facilities in the United States. Spanning over 6 square miles, it has hundreds of roads and tracks to stress test cars. Zibkowski says Ford’s presence leads to company executives and employees living within the township.

Several school districts cover the township

Bruce Township students attend Romeo Community Schools or Almont Community Schools, both ranked A-minus on Niche. They can also go to Armada Area Schools, which has a B-plus.

Parks in Romeo and golfing sports

Orchard Hills Park features a playground, basketball court and picnic shelter. The Romeo Community Center, just outside the township, has multiple amenities, including a basketball court, baseball diamonds, skate park and an ice rink open in winter. The 24-mile Macom Orchard Trail also passes through the area. The township also has several orchards and cider mills, including the Stony Creek Orchard and Big Red Orchard.

The township also has several public golfing facilities. The Heather Hills Golf Club has a 6,400-yard layout. Bruce Hills Golf Club has a Par 70, 5,600-yard course. The Three Oaks Golf Center, on the northern edge of the township, has a driving range and mini golf. Events and attractions in downtown Detroit are 40 miles south.

Dining and shopping on Van Dyke Road

Restaurants can be found on Van Dyke Road, near Orchard Hills Park. The Times Square Restaurant serves breakfast items, sandwiches and burgers. The Golden Buddha offers authentic Thai cuisine. Restaurants in downtown Romeo include Spice 21, which serves traditional Indian dishes. Romeo Kitchen + Bar has salads, sandwiches and pizza.

Van Dyke Road has smaller convenience stores and a local grocery store in Sheena’s Marketplace. Larger grocery stores, including Kroger and Meijer, and big box stores are south in Washington. Henry Ford Macomb Hospital is 20 miles south.

Route 53 and connections to multiple airports

Michigan Highway 53 runs through the township and runs south to downtown Detroit and Interstate 69 to the north. Bishop International Airport is 50 miles west, while Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County is 57 miles south.
