Buckhorn offers peaceful rural living in California's Gold Country
Buckhorn is a small, rural community in Amador County with a population of about 2,500. Located in the state’s Gold Country region, Buckhorn was once a gold mining town in the 1800s and shares the area’s collective history from the Gold Rush Era. Today, this hillside community has several shops along California state Route 88 and is close to highways, public schools and parks. Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, houses are often secluded and tucked in the woods, with many trails and state parks in the surrounding areas.

Buckhorn’s homes are usually tucked in the woods and sit along winding hillsides. Built from the 1950s to the early 2000s, properties are a mix of ranch-styles, raised ranches, deck houses and cottages. Mobile homes in senior communities can list for $20,000 to $80,000, and manufactured homes are usually around $200,000. Many lots are about half an acre to an acre. Pioneer Park has a playground, a sports field and a tennis court, and Tiger Creek is a popular fishing area. Mollie Joyce Park is just west of Buckhorn and features an 18-hole disc golf course and two Little League fields. Many hiking trails surround the community, including the Gold Note Trailhead. About 10 miles west in Pine Grove, Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park has the Chaw'se Regional Indian Museum that displays Native American jewelry and tools, a reconstructed Miwok village, camping areas and two trails that let visitors explore the local plants and wildlife.

The Amador County Unified School District serves the community. Pioneer Elementary School, which teaches kindergarten through sixth grade, has a B-minus grade from Niche. Jackson Junior High School gets a C-plus, and Amador High School rates a B-plus. Amador High offers Advanced Placement courses and career pathway programs and partners with Amador College Connect to provide students with dual-enrollment classes.

Several establishments are located along California state Route 88, including the local pizzeria Ray's Pizza. Residents can get daily essentials and groceries at Young’s Payless Market IGA and Dollar General. Le's Chinese Restaurant is just south of the community in Pioneer. Big-box stores like Lowe’s and Walmart are about 20 miles west in Jackson.
Distance to major hospital and airport
California state Route 88, known locally as the Carson Pass Highway, passes through the area. Sacramento International Airport is approximately 75 miles west, and Sutter Amador Hospital is about 15 miles away. Amador Transit bus stops are along California state Route 88, which provides public transportation throughout the county.
Events in Amador County
Amador County has many events and festivals throughout the year. The Amador County Fair takes place in August and features livestock shows and live entertainment. Each June, Jackson hosts the annual Italian Picnic celebration, which has carnival rides, wine tasting and a parade.
