A neighborhood built around healthcare
The city of Buffalo is known for its rich history in the railroad and steel industries, but the Grider neighborhood is defined by a different industry. At the heart of Grider is Erie County Medical Center, or ECMC, which has been in the neighborhood since it first opened as Buffalo City Hospital in the early 20th century. Today, the medical campus remains one of the largest facilities in Western New York and employs over 3,000 people. “The biggest difference between Grider and other neighborhoods is the hospital is right there and brings a lot of high-paying, good-quality jobs, since they employ locally,” says Ayat Nieves, a licensed real estate salesperson with Keller Williams Realty. Residents of Grider not only benefit from local jobs and top-tier medical care in their own backyard but also enjoy accessibly priced homes, community parks and ample public transportation.
Near downtown Buffalo, Grider is celebrated for its cultural richness and community engagement.
The neighborhood of Grider offers a rich history and artful decorations throughout town.

Early 20th-Century homes with a distinct style
Grider is made up of a mix of doubles and singles built between 1900 and 1920. These homes are what locals call “Old Style,” and take inspiration from Cape Cod architecture with features like pitched roofs, dormer windows and covered porches. Houses are built close together but still have enough space between them for most residents to have their own front and back yards, as well as a narrow driveway and detached garage. Most properties in the neighborhood sell for between $100,000 and $200,000, but several homes sell for under $100,000.
Diverse housing styles in Grider cater to different tastes.

The local farmer's market in Grider brings residents of the community together.
Gathering at the Devalan-Grider Farmers Market
The Glenwood/New Box Park holds events like a Children’s Garden Festival in the spring, and there is always something going on at the Delavan Grider Community Center. The center holds bigger events, too, like the Fall Funk Fest, which features live music, dancing and food. The cost of tickets raises funds for the center to keep playing such an active role in the community. Every Friday from late June through the fall, residents gather at the Devalan-Grider Farmers Market for fresh produce and locally-made goods.
